Sandy Bridge Server Build - Seb

Been thinking about putting together a little media server build for a while now, main use being to store all of media on it, while being able/affordable to keep it running 24/7.

Also to serve as a test bed for me messing around with PHP.

After a little help/persuasion, I decided to go for a low end sandy bridge system in the hope that it will keep going for a while to come and also serve as a backup machine in case I have need of it.

Picked up a few parts from aria the other evening and had it arrive at midday today!

Coolermaster 342 Elite Micro-ATX
Intel Pentium G620 CPU @ 2.6Ghz (Sandy Bridge)
Gigabyte H61M-DS2
GEIL Corsa 2x2GB DDR3
Corsair CX430W
LiteOn DVDRW drive

WD Caviar 180GB for the OS and (Seagate Barracuda 1TB) & (WD RE3 1TB) for media files.









Colour schemes are a little wacky but it'll never be seen so I'm good with that





Ghetto fan mod as I only had 120mm fans



My main rig definitely dwarfs this!

It now sits with just the power and an ethernet cable plugged into it behind my desktop on the shelf, I remote onto it if I ever need to do anything and I'm quite happy to sit there leaving it running all year round now

My main rig was annoying the bill payers (ie. my parents) so I used that as an 'excuse ' to buy something else. Luckily they turned round and said they'd pay for it as it's my birthday in a few weeks! Win!

CPU temps are 29 degrees on idle and after running one pass of Intel Burn Test it hit 53 degrees on the stock cooler which is pretty good!

How're you finding the G620 w/ onboard graphics?

It was fine for me! I only used the onboard to set it up but it managed it really well on my 1080p screen. Can just plug it back in if I ever need anything doing now!

Yeah just cable tied opposing ends of the fan to the door and stuck a bit of sticky felt under the other two to stop it vibrating

Do you think it's a nice shade in real life?

It also under volts nice as well matey if you want to drop the voltage, Should do stock speed and timings at 1.3-1.35v

Very nice build there, only one thing that I would change would be the case. Maybe a Fractal Core 3000?

For the budget though, seems like you have done an amazing job, certainly better than running your main pc all day/night.

Also it should run at 1.35V if you try My mushkin seems to like it too.

Had a spare copy of 7 Ultimate lying around so used that. Not as lightweight as linux but a lot easier for me in case I need to use it for other tasks.

Yeah, the EIST etc in the BIOS bring the G620 down to great temps I've noticed but thats at idle!

I have the same sort of thing with my server although I went to the AMD route.. I use my server more than I use either of my i7 Gaming rigs, but I'm in the middle of trying to give those away and build a 2600k rig with two 3Gb 580 GTX's and 8Gb of ram for the moment..

I went with AMD as I had a friend who had some spares and said because of the onboard GPU with the CPU it would work fine and to be honest, I've been nothing but impressed with it. I can get it idling with as much as 25w draw from the mains plug and that's with 5 hard drives (2 2Tb and 2 1.5Tb Drives) with a DVD-RW, 5 120mm fans and a CPU cooler fan as well plus a 64Gb M4 SSD which my OS sits on.. Same goes for my HTPC rig, that's AMD as well and that doesn't fail to impress with its 15w draw from the mains plug either

I can't wait to get the 2600k running and just see if I can notice any differences with the i7's that I used to have running at 4.4Ghz and 4.6Ghz.....
