Which CPU is best for gaming Athelon 64 or Athelon 64 x 2?

I will be upgrading soon I have a socket 939 3200, What CPU is best for gaming a 64 or 64 x 2, socket 939 or AM2. What size of PSU will I need I have a 80GB IDE HDD, 200GB SATA, 2GB of memory and Geforce 6800GS. Can you guys help me please.

M8 it may be better to say a price you are willing to pay for your new pc bits there is some very good tec guys on this forum the price would help them to help you more

If you are thinking of upgrading mobo aswell as cpu then core2duo are the way. They are pricy but are definatley worth it. They do require DDR2 though, same as AM2. So if you are planning a small upgrade then just go for a X2 939 and slot that in.

I check the aria server most days at about 19:00 and have a quick fly cos I am not to good at flying yet. some times a game starts if Im lucky. Right back to the subject I will be giving my mobo & CPU to No one son so I will be getting both and I have about £350 to £500 max spend. so is duel core better for gaming its just that I read something somewhere saying that the single core FX was best. I will never have this much to spend again so I need all the tec help I can get. thanks guys.

Dual core is definately the way to go mate, may not be many games that utilise it at the mo but theres more to it than multithreaded games, like if your virus checker decides to kick in you wont get slow down, or you want to burn that dvd whilst gaming you can etc etc but soon most games will become dual core compatible and then you will be already geared up for it.

Thanks Duel core it is then. AMD or Intel? I like AMD as I have never had any problems with AMD

AMD are brilliant, and i use them, but Core2duo are amazing speeds. Just look at the competition when you buy.

If you are building from scratch then, as much as i hate to say it, Core 2 duo is the current best cpu money can buy, the baby of the family puts the top end amd x2's / fx's to shame and it only cost just over £120ish, mobo's tend to be a tad pricer, though if your not overclocking any compatible mobo will do.

yeah, im have an e6400 in my main work computer... its def the way to go at the moment if you can afford the extra. I have it overclocked to 2.4ghz per core and its not even breaking a sweat... lots more left in it if I could get round to pushing it further! If you are thinking of overclocking, its not uncommon for people to hit well over 3ghz easily..

Definatly agree with mac124....I play UT2K4 most nights and the last thing i would want is my antivirus kicking in and slowing me down. I can encoded DVD files, burn, use msn and TeamSpeak whilst gaming with no problems at all. It just makes everything more stable and its not really a speed issue.
