Win XP - Won't boot

Hi,

Read about this issue a few times, seen it happen a few times with people running windows xp home. Well, now it's happened to my mother and i'm fed up with the phone calls!
The problem is when windows boots it gets stuck on the 'Welcome' screen part. When trying to boot in safemode it gets stuck on the mup.sys file. Really don't know how to help now!

Whenever I boot into safe mode it takes AGES to process the mup.sys file as well. Have you tried leaving it for absolutely ages? If so Windows is probably corrupt.

you could try repairing the installation but your best bet is to format and start again.

you could put her hard drive into your PC as a secondary drive and copy any important documents across to your PC so she doesn't lose them, then put the drive back into her PC and re-install Windows.

That is my latest plan, although she's 250 miles away so she'll have to post the drive down then me post it back!
Also, talking her through the format and reinstallation of XP is a phone call i could do without! Lol. I believe the problem is caused by a windows update though from what I have read. :evil:

I reckon her chances of installing XP over removing and re-installing the hard drive

same thing happens to me actually, but only 4 times out of 5... I just reset it and and keep trying till it starts. annoying thing about mine is that I am using a 2x160gb raid0 setup, so i cant take the HD out, and i dont have any spare drives going here either...

When you finally get Windows starting, can't you just burn your data to CD then format?

I used to use Raid 0, but for obvious reasons the risk of losing data far outweighs the tiny speed increase, if any at all to be honest.

Well, I can kinda answer both those questions in one

I do alot of music editing/band recording and it also gets used for some video editing too, so thats why I went Raid0 - just trying to get as much performance out of it as I can.

The major bits are backed up, but there is still a coupla hundred gb on there that i'd prefer not to loose if possible! And thats alot of dvds

Its not really too much of a problem for me at the moment - was just more interested to find out if there was a fix for it
