Wireless Network

Hiya, I'm looking at buying a new computer (Parts from Aria) and a laptop (From PC World ), I'll also be giving my mum my old computer.

Basically, I want all 3 to be able to access my broadband and I'm just trying to get my head around how to set up a wireless network so I want to ask a couple of questions.

1) Can I plug the RJ45 from my ntl set top box into a wireless router and then wireless cards into the computers?

2) My mate was telling me you had to make an \"access point\" for it to work as what I said above won't, he said I have to make my PC an access point and plug the ntl into it, and also a wireless access point hub, and then that'll allow the other pc and laptop to connect to it. Is this correct?

I could be wrong but i suspect you would need a cable (as in ntl) specific router, not having ntl im not sure about the specifics but most routers are for adsl.

I am sure someone will be along shortly to clarify one way or another.

You can leave your wireless unprotected, meaning that you dont need to sort out different computers connecting. With the ntl router (silver as mine i assume) then you are correct that you plug the RJ45 into it and then to the wireless router. I can tell you much about wireless as I havent setup it before.

What your friend said would work, but the way you want to do it will work to and is easier

Just make sure you get the right wirless router dont buy an adsl one

Thanks a lot for your help guys I really appreciate it. I've just bought my laptop, ended up going to Toys R Us instead. 1gig mem, 1.6 duo, 100 gig hd and a fair bit of software for 600 quid! I basically had a look at their networking section and it seemed as simple as I said it so I'll be going wireless very soon so thanks everyone!

Yeah I got one of those Toys are us Laptops, dont think its the same spec as your one though, well it wont run any decent games anyway...(Chuckle)...

Yes, you can connect a Wireless DSL/Cable router to the Ethernet port of the NTL Setup box via an Ethernet (RJ-45) cable, and when you install wireless adapter on all of the three system you'll be able to access the internet on all and it is the easiest and more convinient way.

You can also do as your mate told you, but it is not a convininet and reliable way, because in this way your PC that will be access point will have a lot of network traffic and thus network will be very slow then what you'll expect.
