Can I have a Virus scanner on its own please?

Is this too much to ask? I have just done a fresh install of windows and I have downloaded a copy of Mcafee Virus Scan from my online account...

Now last time it was an unobtrusive program that sat quietly in the system tray. It didnt scan anything until I told it to and it didnt use up much memory. Now I get the latest version - good, I thought. a free upgrade is always welcome.

:evil: What a mess. I have popups, icons, balloons and my system tray that was streamlined now had about 8 icons flashing away in nerve jangling colours. I can't even turn the blasted things off! The option has gone! I have to leave a scanner on all the time now so I can stop the system tray exploding into a spectrum of indecipherable icons.

I left symantec because of their insistance of having all sorts of cack switched on at the same time and it looks like mcafee has gone the same way.

If you berks at Mcafee or Symantec are listening - I want a Virus Scanner. Nothing else. I can protect myself against spam, hackers and I F@cking know how to turn on Windows update!

Anyone reccomend a Virus Scanner on its own?

I use AVG free dude. Ok it does have some other crap thrown in buts its easy to disable, doesn't take up hardly any resources.

It does have daily updates which can be an ****, but atleast it keeps itself up to date.

Only has a small little AVG icon in the bottom, which you can get rid of if you want 8)

Not sure what the Panda Antivirus is like, guess we could corner a Systems or Tech guy to demo it for us

Ehm... It's worth mentioning that whilst AVG is great at finding viruses, when it's checking for them it's a bit of a resource hog (unless you have dual core 8) ), and IF it ever finds a virus, it can't really remove it, it'll want you to pay for the elite ultra proper version for that!

AVG Free a resource hog? On a Pentium 2 maybe.... :shock:

And if Robin only wants the Virus scanner then he can easily disable the Resident Shield & Email Scanner.

And AVG Free does remove the Virus's, you make a note of the file it finds, go search for it. It isn't there. :wink:

Also not once has AVG free told me, to delete this file you need to buy the full version.

(This has nothing to do with the fact im an AVG reseller 8)

I've had so far two occasions when AVG has found an infected file, and on both occasions it has told me it can't fix them, or delete them, or anything.

Like I said, I think it's great for scanning the system, but it's never helped me fix anything.

As for resources. If you ever play a computer game and the scanner starts in the background, the game practically grinds to a halt
