    Default GFX troubles

I was running a Radeon 9250 128mb AGP GFX card and was trying to load a game when It wouldnt load the Open GL stuff from the card, unknown to me my card was running on microsoft drivers, I tried to get new ATI drivers and before doing so, i Uninstalled the microsoft drivers and began searching the ATI site for a catalyst controll suite and the drivers. Then, unfortunatley i found that there wasent any drivers done for my card on 64bit windows, and because I prefer the speed on 64 bit windows, and am unwilling to go back to XP pro, I need a new Card. It has to be a Radeon, because all my Nvidia cards ive had sucked, I was looking at the X1000 series ATi, and have a budget of £70, but could stretch £10 more, I think the X1600 PRO would be my best bet, can you Real Techies tell me, I do know a lot about PC's but want to see if my instincts are right, remember, it has to be a AGP, I cant afford a new system!

I could be drawn to the 6600GT as that has some amazing stats compared to the X1600 PRO.. I need some advice.

Trust me - put Xp Pro back on...

X64 looks pretty - BUT although you CPU is giving you nice clocks - your RAM loses a few ms - so even though your cpu is doing more - your bottleneck has just moved from your cpu to your ram...

x64 is a waste of time unless you have over 10gb of RAM

As for the card- i posted one to the reply of the super specials requests by lucy, £72 for the x1600....

im on a 6600gt- they are alright... alot better out there but there alright.

Personally ive found that it depends on your PC configuration and other components - i find ATi cards to have a chunk less performance than nvidias - but it depends which sort of card your mobo is designed around...

But seriously.. (computer shop) near me wont even sell you x64 now without giving you a 10 minute lecture in my area..

It really doesnt give you any advantage- also drivers are a major concern... BETA drivers are no good, as they have not been optimised- so your throwing away power already

just so you know, nvidia support x64

Yeh, I get a lot of troubles from various companies saying they arent going to bother with x64 windows, I am thinking of going back to XP pro, but i cant afford it, a friend let me use his license when he went for a long holiday, so I am stuck with it, and i dont really like my GFX card, it is slower than its supposed to be, and it gives about 30fps on any game i try, even on older ones. Its cheaper for a new card, so I do need to get a new card, and im not going illegal on windows, my windows is a trial tho, so its not too bad, if i have to, will get vista.

Same problems will occur with vista m8 -

Although your less likely to have a problem with vista- just getting it is the problem now as its no longer a public beta (link removed 12th july i think!) or there abouts

can you tell me if ther POV 7300GT AGP 512mb from aria is a good bet for good performance, i wanted a newer card to tie me over until next year when i buy my supercomputer with core2duo if its come down in price, or the quad cpu 45nm AMD and stay faithful to AMD.

And yes it does mean 800mhz ram, it also has a 256bit ring-bus. That makes it the greatest candidate and i will buy it tonight, i will put up with half the ram and go for aria, as they are ledgends, thank me now aria!

I do know a fair bit myself, so your word is fine, and means just as much as a experts opinion to me, i was going towards ati cards anyway.

Just found out my cashcard is inactive, so for a few days i cant buy the card, so can wait for other opinions.

In my opinion yes, obviously not a HUGE difference, But I think it would give you slightly more bang for your buck.

Before you buy anything you might wanna wait for 1 of the experts to confirm/disagree with me [/quote:821d22490c]

x1600 is pants compared to a decent 7300gt ddr3 (the stock clocks on my are 500core 700mem (effectively 1400 memory) please check out the other guys post whos on about getting one i posted some linkies to reviews to show how bad the 1600pro is.

I need a good card, for £100 inc vat and delivery, can you point out the best card i could get?

Also, you cant get a ddr3 version in agp, its unusual to get a ddr2 version, which is on agp of aria.

Hmm just noticed you were talking AGP my view still stands but im not sure if the 7300gt ddr3 comes in agp.

In which case there isn't alot to choose between the 6600gt and the 1600pro.

    http://wwww.vr-zone.com/?i=3092&s=1 comparison between the 2.

Yep i have had a quick look round and the 7600gs would be the one to go for in your price range, assuming the clocks are the same as the others then the 512mb version would be good, though tbh the 512mb will only really make a difference at really high resolution. Personally i would take clock speed over memory as long as it has at least 256mb.
