    Default Typical

As mentioned, i upgraded to 20mb but was only getting ~6.

Rang up, they say you should wait until 24hours from when you rang first, so i did they said, wait for 1 more hour. I did, reset modem etc..., restarted pc = same thing.

Rang up, then they say are you using USB? yes was my reply. So now they told me to go an buy an ethernet cable to use to get 20mb, they would send me it but they get stolen in transit

So they take £5 off of the bill and make you buy it yourself

So, i need a preferably around £5 around 1m ethernet cable for use with my computer and a motorola surfboard sb5100 modem

Wtf? USB2.0 has a 480 Mbit/s transfer rate, thats over 4 times faster than 10/100 ethernet. And considering that his internet is only 6 Mbit/s there should be no difference.

I would say that the problem is drivers or something.

Theoretical bandwidth of usb is 480mbit, in reality you wont get much more than 160mbits, and thats with everything working at its best. Yes you shouldve known that LAN is faster, and it is a fair bit faster than usb.

Lan should also use a lot less processor time.

Got a CAT 5E Patch cable, speed is now around 3500 kbps whereas it was 5800 on usb?

EDIT : done a speedtest on DSLzone and then speedtest.net again upto 10mb.

Still no where near 20 though

Yep, same for me. Never ever got 20meg, always around the 1.2 mark, so have downgraded to 4Meg and now get the Full 4Meg. Also the 4Meg will be upgraded to 10meg soon so i will be pretty much back to where i started but paying less

they say that the ammount of users around doesnt matter but it does, my m8 has 20meg and he gets about 16 thru the day till about 7ish and then it goes up to full till around 7am when it drops a bit again. mine has always been bang on what i expected but then mine wsa 2 now 4 and is about to be 10 so...cant grumble.

virgin/cable does get much closer to its advertised speeds than most get on telephone lines tho. sky are selling 16meg round here but nobody will get near half that so...

I get about 16 meg during the day, about 2.2MB download, that is pretty constant, the thing is that 16 out of 20 is pretty good, and as fast as i would want, when i go upto 50, 40 out of 50 is more than enough methinks.

I have never had below 2.4MB/s (19.2mbps) using multi-part downloading.

^ When server is fast enough ofc. Downloading from my vps also shows max'd out at 20.5mbps (single part).
