    Default Nec 24WMGX3 24" to Iiyama ProLite B2712HDS 27"

I've asked this question on another forum, trying to get more opinions.

Just wondering, are TN panels really that crap? whats so bad about them?

    I've had 3 TFT screens:

    (P-MVA) 19" Viewsonic VP930b (1280x1024)
    (S-PVA) 24" DELL 2407WFPB REV A04 (1920x1080)
    (A-MVA) 24" Nec 24WMGX3 (1920x1200)

Would it be a big mistake switching to a Iiyama ProLite B2712HDS 27" (TN Panel) the resolution is 1920x1080 @ 27" will I actually see a visible different compared to 1920x1200 @ 24" ?

    Thoughts . . . . .

Backwards step, lower resolution, bigger pixel pitch, and a cheaper monitor as well as a TN over a MVA panel..

    I wouldnt tbh.

The pixel pitch and colour production would be the main issues, I think I'll probally wait as I'm in no rush, maybe in another year more IPS 27" panels out, maybe cheaper with production costs etc.

If you're used to those, you will not enjoy going to TN panels.

I find the main issue is how compressed the color spectrum is,

I've never used a TN panel or know anyone who has used one so not had the benefit or knowing or seeing what their like, I know the viewing angles are poor but I'm sat in front of the PC anyway so not an issue there.

Even at work we use (IPS) HP LP2275w for our work stations.

Go to a shop and try a TN out? Can you live with it and does it meet your requirements?

I bought a B2712HDS as a stop gap as one of my monitors had packed up. Images looked fine to me after calibrating so I bought another. The requirement at the time was for photo editing and has good sRGB representation.

I have a U2711 at work now but unfortunately don't game there

Are games colour managed yet? Or do they play slightly saturated on a IPS extended gamut panel?

This would be a terrible mistake.

TN panel viewing angles are so bad that they cannot even display a solid colour evenly - try it, make the screen a solid colour and you will see a very pronounced gradient from top to bottom. TN is nice for making cheap displays and low power consumption, but the technology is inadequate for anything above 19" 4:3 / 22" 16:9 (and even at those sizes the colour/gamma shifts are obvious at desktop viewing distances)

As for the resolution, that's a different issue - the 24" is noticeably sharper due to the much higher pixel density, but if it's only for playing games you can adapt quickly.

If you want to upgrade you really need to go to one of the 27" or 30" IPS panels, but it'll cost you you £500-£2000. A 24" IPS would yield an improvement in viewing angles and motion response, but perhaps it's not worth it for the overall cost while keeping the same screen size.

I'm not sure if there are any *VA panel 27" with 2560x1440, but there are some *VA 30" with 2560x1600 although I don't think they're particularly worth considering.

no, until MS make a version of Windows that is colour aware, standard gamut sRGB panels are the best option.
