    Default Laptop!

I'm after a laptop, but i want it very cheap.

Not too bothered if it comes with a Hard Drive, Not bothered if it doesn't have any memory, Not bothered if it has no operating system.

Budget is £200. Nothing any higher, as thats at a push.

I do though want a good battery, and nothing to big (heavy).

So basically i'm looking at refurb models, Ebay, ect . .

    Any idea's?

I've checked with our Stock Controller and we havent got any refurbs in at less than £200 at the moment Im afraid.
The Server is Down! Quick! I need a roll of duct tape, 3 wads of chewed gum, a paperclip and a plastic fork!

You *might* pick up a very early centrino model, but they are more like £300

[quote:a5eddf9273=\"bouncyb\"]and then if its a centrino it should have a low power cpu and have a reasonable battery of perhaps 2 hours if your lucky[/quote:a5eddf9273]

I wouldnt go for anything Pre-Centrino if your looking for battery life.

Also find something with a small screen, not too much ram, and a low clock [1.5Ghz]. Avoid a GPU, and disable the wirless card

    Wont be very useful though

    EDIT: I've told porkies:

Quick look on ebay reveals 1.6Ghz centrino's with OS for under £200

    My how prices change...

Intel Pentium III mobile 1200MHz processor ?

Not convinced it will have much battery life! Centrino is a big leap in terms of battery efficiency.

Yep - brilliant CPUs - the Tualatin laid the ground rules for both the Pentium M CPUs and even the Core 2 Duo CPUs - that's right baby - the P4 is dead and we're all using modified PIIIs again!

It'll have tonnes - the Centrino was a big leap over the Prescott based laptops - which were poo!

But isnt the Centrino platform about all the components in the laptop conforming to certain power saving criteria?
Intel only licenced the Centrino name to the OEM's who met these critia.
I dont know much about PIII's as mobile processors, but how do we know the efficiencys of the other components?

    Am I wrong?

    It seems you missed the point of my post;

\"It'll have tonnes - the Centrino was a big leap over the Prescott based laptops - which were poo!\"

The prescott laptops ruined everything - I've still got a 1.2GHz PIII Mobile and the battery lasts about 4 hours - I've also got a Core 2 Duo laptop and the battery lasts (if I'm lucky) 2 hours...

    WoW!

Your new and expensive laptop lasts as long as my laptop that cost £70 - that's amazing!

The Architect - Thanks for checking!

    _ _ _

Pentium III is too old / Pentium IV were crap / AMD Athlon (Socket 462/A) same for a 754. . not interested.

Ideally i want something that is Centrino, Socket 939 or newer!

There must be something out there, that fits my needs.

Erm, just so you guys know, my ThinkPad X40 has a Pentium M, not a Pentium III-M. It's based on the Alviso core, and damn fine it is. And as for battery life it lasts ages, since the screen is a mere 12\", the CPU is pretty power-efficient and the graphics are modest.

I also have a ThinkPad T43 which is far more powerful, less energy efficient though.

I have a dell c610 which i got cheap off a mate that works for them.

Its a P3 1ghz, 1GB ram and i think it runs pretty fast. The only let down is the graphics on it.
But i get about 5 hours on that...6 at a push
