Repeating Computer

Hi all. Hope sum1 can help! I turned my comp' on and the initial screen (Black with white txt) came on - with the details of my system properties etc... then to the start up screen - :?

I clicked the sign in button and it went back to the begining again --( the initial screen (Black with white txt) came on - with the details of my system properties ). :?

It did this several times then finally - the Power Unit started making a noise (forgot what kind of noise) and I turned it off and back on and it still made a noise - like a faint clicking sound now I come to think about it.

I then turned it off and it wouldn't turn on again. :

Yesterday I bought a new Case with Power Unit (Warrior) and my Son took everything out of my old comp and fitted them into the Warrior case and there's nothing coming up on the Monitor! The Warrior is powering up OK but nothing on the Monitor - my Son thinks it's the Graphics Card - Any Ideas??

Possibly check that the card is seated correctly in the agp/pci 16/pci e slot and also make sure that the monitor lead is on tightly on the back of the card.Alo dunno like what is the psu in new box possibly card might not be kicking up (powering up or just maybee the card might be knackered.

Also check your keyboard for num lock,caps lock and scroll lock flickering on when you first boot up if they flicker your hdd is ok and it is gcard issue!!!

oh right smart ar se maybee your card has a power socket requiring you to connect a hardrive power lead to it to power up just check all wires are were they should be in relation to your graphics card or maybee im wrong or possibly your monitor lead could have a split in it causing no signal to be recieved by your monitor or maybee im wrong again el robin will no doubt correct me!!!

i dont think elrobin was trying to be smart. he was just stating that watching for flashing keyboard lights isnt a way to diagnose the health of your hard drive. you could start up a computer with no hard drive in it at all, and the keyboard lights would still flash.

But i do agree with him that the clicking noise sounds like a dead/dying hard drive.

Couple of other things - do you have any spare vid cards laying around that you could test in the new box? they dont have to be anything special - just enough to swap in to see if the other video card has bitten the dust or if it is another problem. And as was mentioned above, check the new PSU ratings to make sure there is enough power to run the computer.

I agree with PP / Aaron it could well be psu. Unplug any unnecessary hardware (ie slave HDD/optical drives , case fans etc) and try booting.

But yes a full spec list would be helpful as psu's that come with cases are notoriously cheap and nasty. Just because it says 500watts, or whatever, on it doesn't necessarily mean it can sustain 500watts. I'd take a 420watt Tagan psu over some bundled 500watt psu any day.

i Agree, but disagree with the posts of some users in this forum, if you have nothing constructive useful and/or nice, why bother saying it ? Trolling is against the rules, and for those who do not know its the same as picking a fight,


but i agree that full specs are needed, personally i think it could be psu being overloaded - will still boot but could make any noise, depends what fuse (if any!) it has in it =)

Clicking is normally a hard drive problem.

So im guessing your hard drive, is dead as it was restarting at the Windows Logon screen.

So remove your hard drive. Turn on your computer.

(You should get a Invalid Boot Disk Error)

If you do then you need a replacement hard drive and to reinstall Windows.

If you remove the hard drive, and you still have no picture start with the basics.

Remove the motherboard from the case, and place it outside on a non static resource.

Plug in the graphics card (if you have one)

Add the memory (make sure its secured)

Then add the power cords. To just the motherboard. No HDD's or CD/RW.

(Motherboard, Processor, fan, memory and graphics card should be the only components your using?)

Then try and power your system.

(You get a picture and Invalid Boot Disk?)

Still no picture? Then you need to start thinking about a new Graphics Card.

Can you borrow one from a friend?
Or www.aria.co.uk and buy a new one.

Hi Guys, Well finally I am back on (A) computer (my Sons) Never did find out what was wrong with mine. So, my son (smart-rse) said he would build me another one - so - to cut a long story etc... the one he built was better (Faster and stuff??) than His so he gave his to me and kept the one he built (Not bad far a Lad who is disabled (Aspergers Syndrome) )

Now the thing is - My old hard drive is still sitting there inside my old case - not connected - can I get it checked out without screwing up my new comp' ? I know I could take it to Aria - what's the charge? -I got a lotta stuff on there about MoneyMaking and I hope it's all retrievable.

I just got to thank you guys again for answering my problems - cheers--.

Yeah it should be fine.

If your old drive is IDE and your new one is IDE.

You need to set your old drve to Slave 1st. (Jumper on the back of the hard drive)

Then just connect the hard drive to the cable your new one is on.

If your comp doesn't boot then, it sounds like your hard drive is stuffed.

slave as 2ndary drive on a working pc and just copy contents over.
if it's really looking dead, you have 2 options:
1) go to www.retrodata.co.uk and talk to duncan. he's the only affordable data recovery guy.
2) if you want a last ditch attempt to get data off, stick drive in plastic bag and put in the freezer for an hour. take it out and quickly stick it in a working pc to copy data off before it warms up. this works in cases where drive failure's down to stuck bearings. sometimes.
