    Default Radeon HD4870

I am buying Radeon HD4870 card but was wondering if it would fit in my case. Hereare some pictures.

I was woried wherever the graphics card would be too long on the motherboard and that it would hit the ram sockets and not fit in or overheat easier if it was touching them and that if it grew too much in height it would hit a capacitor below the PCI-E port.

Would I need to buy any more fans for this card aswell or is all the cooling needs in the box?

On a side note my friend bought exactly the same card however when he tries playing games with it after about 30mins of playing his entire system crashes and Alt+Ctrl+Del (The screen just freezes and displays the last frame of the game) wont work at al and it loops a horrible loud static noise. He plugs in his card via HDMI so thats where the sound comes from. Also he turned down the frequency of the card and it appeared that the crashes happened less frequently or that they wouldnt be as seriuos as before as they would happen without the horrible static noise and the screen would just display black rather than the last frame of the game.

It looks like it should fit.

Your friend should send his card back if it's in warranty.

Sounds like it's on its way to the graveyard.

Is your PSU up to the job?

    It doesn't look like it.

So it wont get in the way of the RAM sockets or the capacitors on the mobo? The capacitors pretude out quite far.

What about cooling? Is everything I need in the box?

And my friends card is fairly new. He claims it could be a ventilation problem. Could a ventilation problem do that? I thought it was a CPU being too slow for the graphics card to draw.

The graphics card comes as one unit and you just plug it in. Don't worry about capacitors, the slots on the motherboard will be in the right place so the card will fit.

Your friend's computer could be overheating. That could explain a lockup. The cpu being slow wouldn't do something like that.

What about the RAM sockets? What should I do if the end of the card cant get in because my RAM sockets are in the way? Because if the card goes up in height it will get in the way of the RAM clamps and if it goes on for too long and theres chips on the back they to will get in the way?

And if it touches the ram sockets wont it conduct heat? so wont I need to buy more fans?

    Thanks in advance

I have never seen a GPU that goes up from the PCE-E slot, they all face down unless you fit a watercooling block.

Sorry I didnt mean like the whole thing going I meant like having just a few tiny chips on the back.

What about cooling will I need to buy anything or is everything in the box? Especially if te problem my friend is having is due to overheating and Im getting the same card as him. He to has a micro-ATX mobo just like me.

i have got a 4870 in rig and i can see no problem fitting in your case
these cards run hot mine is running at 54c at the mo-
i did fit a vortexx neo but hasnt made much difference to temps

tell friend to leave side of case off and see if it crashes still

if your friend thinks it could be the card overheating then have ati ccc open to view temps while gaming to see what temps the gfx card is getting to. if he has got a low end case with minimal cooling then it could very well be the gfx overheating as said above the 4870 gets fairly toasty.

also if the 4870 doesn't fit inside your case then you could just cut away the blocking hdd bays if necessary but you should be fine so long as it has adequate cooling and of course a decent psu powering it

It's not actually the HDD drives that I think will get in the way. Its the RAM sockets.

Apart from a few surface mount components, which would only add 1mm or 2mm to the thickness, there shouldn't be anything on the back of the card to get in the way of the RAM sockets.
Taking the back of your current card as a reference,if it could be extended past the ram sockets without fouling then any standard card should be fine.

pci cards face downwards not upwards so you'll be fine, no motherboard would be designed so that the ram sockets could potentially be blocked by a gfx card
