    Default bridge?

    http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Perip...age=2&rqcType=

    hello people, moving house soon and hoping for the following setup;

router downstairs, dhcp'ing ips to all that want them!
main machine upstairs, wireless to router (no probs)
wired lan upstairs, 4-5 machines into switch
the above product into upstairs switch
the above product sends all dhcp requests downstairs to the router
we all enjoy the lan & internet connections

    is this possible?

    thanks

I'm pretty sure it'll work, looks logical enough to me, I've just never tried to connect a wired network wirelessly to a router before.

But like i say, 80% sure it'll work

Do a search fop HomePlug devices

I recon that might be better for what you want to do, wire everything from your electric system, at least to connect your router to your switch upstairs.

HI Not exactly sure what you mean about \"wireless to router no probs\" If you already have wireless to the router upstairs why would you need another WAP? What you need is peer to peer or act as a slave to the downstairs host. In the questions and answers it says it should act as a peer to peer but I cannot see any technical details yet. I will look later. When I am away from work?

im needing to set this up because the wired lan upstairs will be a combination of test machines, machines in for repair, linux & bsd variants, etc who all will have limited or no wireless support.

main machine (xppro) will connect to router no probs in another room.

the question is will the access point forward dhcp requests then resolve connectivity, or will it be capable of dishing out ips on the same subnet as the router, forwarding dns to the router (giving me internet?)

thanks for the replies, had though about homeplug but would like to get this going.

You would only want one dhcp server on the network. So pick one and turn all the others off. Doesn't really matter which one. Any other bridge switch or router will then forward the requests. As you would be using a sort of bridge everything would just get forwarded.

I am not too sure about the wireless it would depend on the actual device. the wireless devices work in 2 ways either as peer to peer (bridge) or WAP to multiple slaves. If you use peer to peer I am not sure any other device could get in and it would be like a wire replacement. If you use slave to WAP the lots of other devices could talk to the WAP. If you are using peer to peer you could just replace it with a bit of wire or as has been suggested a powerline ether. I use one here from the garage (wireless is flakey out there) and it works great. If you use WAP to slave then you can obviously use more devices in the house on wireless.

I hope this clears somethings up and as I say I am not too sure on the linksys device and some of the specialties on wireless.

Should have added the powerline just plugs in to the mains and gives you a ether socket. You then plug another in (on the same phase but it is a bit of a strange house that would use more than one phase) and connect the rj45s leads and it just works. You can also get different speeds. Mine work across different segments off the mains dis board so it does not even have to be the same mains ring.

    nice, thanks for the input.

i had set up something similar using an evaluation version of Server2003. Server was part of the wired network, 2-3 other machines in the switch along with it, Server dhcp off. Server was wirelessly connected to router (getting an ip), Server nat was on. Wired network (apart from server) all set for static ips on the same subnet at the router with the Server as gateway. Server forwarded all requests, all was good!

got thinking, if i could get a wee linux distro designed specifically for this... only wireless support is poor... so what is a small, dedicated, wirelessly supported box with an os that doesnt cost £300+...

    here i am!
