    Default New Camera Wanted...

Ok I currently have a Olympus mju 810 Compact camera Which i have had for about 4years now. and although the camera is in excellent condition and does everything reasonably well I've decided i now want a new camera.

    Budget £150 (MAX)
Doesn't need to be the latest greatest camera.
Would possibly like a Bridge Camera (between dslr & compact)

What should i be looking at?

Have seen the Fujifilm FinePix S2000HD which comes in around my budget.
    Is this any good?

    Thanks guys.

What are you going to be using it for?

To put it another way, snaps or photographs?

    • Sports
    • Children
    • Portraits
    • Landscapes.
    • Flowers
    • Buildings
    • Cars

    They all require different things.

If you want pictures of anything and everything, then you can use the digital equivalent of the "Box Brownie".

I have both Canon Digital SLR and a Canon Powershot.

The former is outside your budget. The latter is for "snaps".

I prefer the Powershot to the Ixus I owned because the Powershot is more versatile, albeit slightly bigger. It also takes regular batteries.

Be wary of the "pixel" count. Anything bigger than 10MB is over the top unless you plan to print huge posters. (I got this from a professional photographer.)

One camera in the slot you describe is the PowerShot SX210 IS. But it is outside of your price range.

The Canon Powershot SX120 IS is nearer to your price range. My favourite supplier has it for £159.

I'm looking for something that i can use for most situations.
Also that would be better than my existing compact camera especially in low light as mine has a tendency to have some noise on there.

Would like something with a good zoom and decent Macro shot on there too though.

Will have a look at the Powershot now.

    Cheers

Interested in this, also looking for a bridge type camera for around that type of cash (maybe up to £200ish)

Won't be buying for a few months though.

Think I saw a Fuji in a supermarket for £125, looked ok from a distance & but never got to have a decent look. Last weeks Gadget show did a Bridge camera feature, can't remember which won but pretty sure it was well over both our budgets.

The sony won if i remember which was about £250-£300

Thinking the Fuji i listed above may be the I go for but would like others opinions first.

PowerShot might be good for your needs.

Low light can be a bugger.

Another plus for Canon is the Image Stabiliser technology. They had it first, but it is probably ubiquitous these days.

was it the A200 which won? cracking DSLR for £250 with image stabilisation built into the body and a kit lens included in price!

You say you already have an Olympus.

    They make good cameras.

As there isn't a lot of difference between features and brands, you might want to consider sticking with Olympus so that you donlt have to crawl up a learning curve on the camera and the software.

Agreed, I have an aging u410 and its still decent but am looking to get rid of that soon. I think you'll probably need to spend £200 to get a much better camera than the one you have now. The cameras on sale for £100-£150 are pretty damn good but may not represent such a leap forward.

A Mate has bought a Panny Lumix TZ7, its going for about £215 with 12x zoom and 720p video. I think I will get that one as well.

    Cheers.

I think my main reason for upgrading is getting something that has less noise in low light, has a better zoom and decent Macro.

In normal light i've had some decent pictures from the Olympus and cant fault it for build and features but when you've had something for a while you just feel like missing something on newer models.

    Thanks appreciate the help guys.

If I were you, I would stick with what you have got. Looks like a neat little camera.

When it comes to shooting in the dark, you might not get much out of a standard camera.

Given that Aria doesn't sell cameras, I'll point you at the place I go for advice.

Park Cameras is staffed with enthusiasts who know what they are talking about. Their prices match most.

I usually go in but if you call them and go through the bits you mentioned before, they may be able to point you towards a camera that fills the bill.

Certainly cheaper than buying a new camera!

Actually, a few people on this forum, and similar places, might like to work out how to take photos of the gubbins inside their PCs.

Too many are out of focus or "blinded" by flash reflections.

Sometimes to the extent that it is impossible to see what is going on.

I like to photograph things as I go along. Then you can see remember the wires go. Or what the MAC address is on the motherboard, things that are very hard to get at when the box is closed.
