Default New Build - But no display!!!!

I recently purchased some new computer parts. ASUS p5pe-vm motherboard, intel core 2 duo e4300 processor, 1gb ddr400 RAM, 80gb sata and dvd drive.

I assembled the pc and plugged in the vga cable to the on board vga port and nothing appeared on screen. I then inserted a dedicated AGP graphics card and still nothing. The computer sounds as if it starts up, I hear a single faint beep, but nothing at all appears on screen.

I ran an PCI-diagnostic card and got the error d4 on an AMI BIOS. It said it means \"CHipset initialization/auto memory detection. About to gebin. Check SIMM for mismatch\" - Does this mean my memory isnt compatible with the motherboard?

This one has got me stumped, and help/hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!

    Thanking you in advance.

How many sticks of ram do you have in there? Might be worth trying each stick one at a time and in different slots.

This will be asking the obvious, but do you know that the monitor is good and working?

I have 1 stick of 1GB RAM, and i know the monitor is defienately working. Its a weird problem. The trouble is it sounds like it is starting up.

Ok, this is worth checking. When you'd built the machine etc etc, did you clear the CMOS before you started it up? If not, have a go at clearing the CMOS. The amount of times that fixed none booting computer problems

As it's an 865 board you'll need a recent BIOS for core2 duo support, it's possible that the board has an older version.

If you have accesss to a pre-core2 775 CPU I'd recommend trying that to see if that's where the problem lies.

I have tried clearing the CMOS, removing the system battery - still no luck and i have tried a pentium d in it and there is still nothing. Im starting to think that it is the motherboard.

The BIOS was giving you a clue with the SIMM mismatch. If you can, try another stick of mem in there, try a different slot, etc.
