With Vista just arriving i thought it would be neat to have an official Vista thread to discuss problems, faults and apps which work with Vista.

I've been playing around with lower specification machines and Vista and the lowest i've had it installed on was:

512MB Memory
AMD Athlon 1800+
300GB HDD
FX 5200

I have to say it works excellent, its not slow at all. My performance ratio from Vista was 2 which im guessing is out of 10?

I've now have my work PC dual booted with XP and Vista business, and have basically moved over.

Only things holding me back are:

HDD imaging software: Have the paid version of R-Image doesn't work with Vista yet.

Anti Virus: Haven't really checked for which company's support Vista but im pretty sure AVG free does.

The Parental controls when Vista is first installed really does suck bad, everything you do, will ask for your permission. But it's very easy to turn off.

I'm disapointed by the lack of games on Vista business: IE none!!
But i have Suduko & Poker side bars added which keep me entertained when im bored.

I love the RSS feed on the side bar, doesn't seem to update regulary though.

All in all i'm flipping impressed with Vista, just lacking some support at the moment

Oh and i love the Windows Key + TAB feature.

I've been reading loads of sites to get all my information ect....

So many people are just slamming Vista basically because its made by Microsoft.

They layout is so simple even El could work out how to use it :wink:

In regard to your question about the Performance Index, 5.9 is the maximum rating for each individual component, so 5.9 is the highest number you can achieve.

I assume this will be increased as hardware improves, so that the rating system stays current. This would be the smart move, anyway.

I got 5.0, on account of my low-end CPU (AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+). All my other components achieved the full 5.9.

I've been using Longhorn/Vista since build 3718, all the way through the Beta 1 builds, Beta 2 builds and the Release Candidates. I'd like to think I could answer most questions you guys have, if needed.

I thought the max for performance was 5? When I ran the thing I got an average of 4.8, which out of 5 I thought was pretty good

It's not an average, your overall score is the lowest score out of the 5 subscores. So if all your components get 5.9, but your graphics gets 2.1 , your overall will be 2.1.

And the maximum is 5.9.

Does anyone know whether Vista supports X-FI cards yet? when I tried it a few months ago it was very hit and miss as there were no official drivers.

AVG works on Vista Ultimate, there are some Nvidia drivers as well..no full drivers for Audigy 2 ZS just beta version. HL2 works as long as you don't let steam mess it up :wink: Farcry64 installs runs menu and demo screen but I get a messed up white screen when I try to play game (though that could be me, need to try the 32bit version). Also not looked to see if there are any drivers for the saitek gaming mouse yet or any R200 printer drivers (but I guess those could be on already lol)

The chess game you get on ultimate is addictive as is inkball..I got 3.6 on the vista performance thingy but that was down to the hard drive I installed it on (old 30gig WD found in a drawer and set up as primary slave so I didn't have to mess about creating partitions on main drive lol)

Finally disabled the UAC cos it got annoying but other than that I like it

Disabling UAC is always the first thing I do. Thankfully it's easy, thanks to msconfig.exe, though it does require a reboot. :roll:

As for the graphics drivers - they suck. And that goes for nVIDIA and ATi. As of yet there are no OpenGL drivers, which means I cannot move to my copy of Vista Ultimate as my primary OS because I play alot of Open GL Quake.

But that'll be okay once it's available (only 4 days now) to the public. I think it'll improve greatly once all the little extras start working (Windows Ultimate Extras, AnyTime Upgrade etc.) on the 30th January.

They should look at it this way, If it wasn't for Microsoft i doubt we'd be using a Computer at all. Or at least not what Windows can do.

Strange, so far every PC i have installed Vista on has found all the drivers itself.

Except for a Scuzi Card, but i would have been shocked if it had!!

Seriously need to start looking into a program that can make an image of a hard drive but works with Vista.

If anyone comes across anything then please let me know.

Hmmm.... i never thought about that.

As i have never used Norton ghost, then my knowledge of it, is limited.

The most important thing for it to do is:

When i remove a hard drive from a clients computer, i want to be able to take a image from it, by putting it into my External USB thingy me jigga.

Can it do that? 8)

Maybe, I haven't used Norton Ghost in years. the last time I used it I can thwe option to make an image to another drive, or an image onto CD.

Yup, Ghost'll do that. But the compression is terrible, so the image always ends up being huge... But as long as it's an image of a computer that doesn't store alot of media and games it should work admirably. For a fresh Windows Vista installation, I mean.
