    Default Zone Labs trouble

    Hi,
I have had a problem with my computer now for about a year, i have been too busy to sort it but now i have got time and i want it sorting.
I am on dial up (no laughing, lol) each time i open the connection it will load up the home page ok, but say if i want to update my anti virus or check on my email using Outlook express, the programs won't load, even task manager won't.
The only way to solve this is to close the internet connection, i have shutdown the anti virus and it still happens.
So could it be the zone Alarm firewall,
    Any ideas please,

    Cheers

    Ok right,

Think around a year ago, when this started happening what had changed?

Did this start happening around the same time you installed Zone Alarm?

I would recommend removing Zone alarm, disabling AVG Free for now, but as your on dial up it would probably take a couple of years for you to download it again.

Unless you still have the setup files?

    Default Zone labs problem

no iam am just using a standard PCI modem, I have already got the setup files so i won't have to download it again, lol.

I am going to use a different peice of softawre, i have acctuly re-installed windows as a am getting broadband in the next couple of weeks, so if anyone can suggest a really good firewall and anti-virus program, as long as it's not Norton or McAfee.

Cheers guys for your help so far

    AVG Free

    www.free.grisoft.com

I recommend downloading the Anvi Virus and Anti Spyware. Both very good.

Not sure you'll have a need for a firewall to be honest, but if its a must then i always use Zone Alarm free edition.

Could still be a software modem, could be a drivers issue.

    To update your drivers:

    Right click \"My Computer\" > Properties > Hardware TAB > Device manager

Right click the driver you want to update > Click Update Driver.

Follow the instructions on screen to use Windows Update to search for a updated driver.

    _ _ Doesn't Work? _ _

Make a note of what the hardware is: Aka Realtek Modem or something.

Then either post back with what it is, or search Google for it.

And you should be able to find an updated driver.

You would have to find the manufacturer i think and download the drivers from their site.
If i was you i'd do a complete format and reinstall i think.
