I've found that VLC will handle most, if not all, media. However, I've also found the K-Lite codec pack and the Nemo codec pack to be very useful - basically, they should have everything you'd ever need. For those things they don't have, you can use a programme called GSpot (seriously) to find which codecs you need to play the media file.

Just one thing, back in the day I read about a few conflicts from some of the early codecs - I think they're all sorted now, but probably worth reading around about them.

You should be able to find the codec packs through your friendly search engine. I've tended to load up loads of codecs on my pc so that I don't have to worry when something doesn't play in the way I want it to. But VLC is awesome - it even plays Bin files.
