Default recording guitar via microphone an option?

I have issues regarding money to upgrade soundcard/pc so I can get digital recording. I wont record with usb as latency to bad for me. And always had issues with usb music stuff.

Whats recording with a mic like? in terms of quality and sound delay etc?

Are you recording an actual guitar amp? What sort of mic do you have and how are you connecting it to the PC? If you want to use a decent mic for recording guitar (e.g. SM57) you will also need an external mixing desk.

Shame if you can't use USB as I would expect a physical solution to cost your more money than something such as a Line 6 POD Studio GX. Most modern "stand alone" guitar FX will have direct audio out that you should be able to connect to a line in.

As above.. what type of guitar are you recording? Are you using effects? Is it going through an amp?

Ok, so you're going direct in, rather than micing an amp/cab?

Is this just for your own amusement, or is it a serious project?

If it's not for a serious project, your best/cheapest bet would be to take a line out of your effects processor in to the Line In on your PC. You'll get some latency with standard drivers, but install ASIO4ALL and tell your recording program to use that as the driver for the soundcard. You'll get rid of all noticeable latency then (although you might have to adjust a couple of settings in the ASIO4ALL driver control panel).

There will always be latency if you're recording onto a PC. You can get pretty decent USB "sound cards" which are low latency but if you're listening to what you're recording (eg via headphones) then even the smallest of delay will be off putting when playing an instrument.

I would recommend splitting your audio signal: send one to your PC and another to your headphones. It wouldn't be the cleanest of signal you'd send to the PC (ie you're halving your audio strength) but it would be much better than recording via a cheap mic and much cheaper too. Just a standard Y splitter would do the job.

That's why you use an external interface, and take your monitor off that, so you're listening to what goes in, and not listening to what comes out after you've passed it to the PC, if that makes sense

Considering you were going to build a new PC to do this, why not consider a cheap little interface like a Scarlett Solo? about 100 IIRC and will do what you want, over USB, with the ability to monitor without latency.

Not really. You'll half the signal strength but unless you get some really shocking black-market connector with oxidised copper then the signal quality shouldn't be much worse than passing through yet another piece of kit. Certainly wouldn't sound worse than cheap active hardware yet comes at a significantly cheaper price tag.

Scarlett Solo is a great bit of kit. Made by Focusrite. so a decent very well known brand.

I hadn't put two and two together that this is what he was going to build an entire other PC to run. Focusrite Scarlett Solo or something similar would do the job really well.

I wasn't trying to imply that Scarlett Solo was a cheap product but instead that the OP is unlikely to spend money on decent device like Solo given his past posting history.

I only suggested it because I saw the thread where the OP was asking about building a new PC (I assumed to record stuff), and a Focusrite would be cheaper and easier, and product much better results. But of course not as cheap as a Y-cable

I've got a Scarlett 18i8 and it's a damn fine piece of kit.

I still use my ~15 year old Terratec Phase USB. Never failed me - not even when out on the road performing live.
