Default Wireless - Help - Problems

    Hi,

I dont know why but when i play games like Battlefield 2 every so often it will kick me from a server saying iv lost connection, but i carnt have because if i go on firefox that works fine and so does everythign els. If i was to try and rejoin the game server again it would let me but when i get into the game 5seconds later i get kicked saying iv lost connection again. The only way of me getting round this is if i right click on my wireless and click repair. Then it works fine.

Also every so often my internet is extreamly slow and i have no idea why and again the only way i can fix this is by right clicking on my wireless and clicking repair and then my internet is fast again.

This is so annoying, why does this happen and is there a cure of this?

    You any good?
i used to get kicked from Quake servers when i was 'on fire'
seriously it will have more to do with your route to the server.
in the good ol' days I had multiple dial-ups

    couple of things to check.

Firstly - try tracerouting the server ip and see if you get any wierd little hops or slow points in the connection.

Secondly - check the wireless router, is it secured? If so how?

Thirdly - does the router have a firewall module? If so are your port forwarding the BF ports to your ip address?

This might sound a tad hard but most wireless routers are relatively simple to configure once you get past the jargon.

Wireless can be interfered with by mobile phone signals so again, if you're recieving or sending texts, or making calls and you get disconnected - bingo! you've found your problem.

GL sorting it - game disconnections are the bane of any gamers life

My first things id think would be ISP, if it commonly goes down in the late afternoon 3-7pm then its a bottleneck in your area (too many people using hte net at once)

Second would be things like is your router near your cordless phone, tv or other devices / large metal objects that might interfere with the signal causing it to drop occasionally just long enough to loose ur game but explorer still work.

If your router is not netgear

    Solution: Buy netgear

    Eeeep!!

I had a netgear wireless router - lasted 12 months - went pop.

We've used netgear routers at work - 12months - pop!

I'd avoid netgear and dlink for that matter. Best reviewed wireless router I've seen so far is a usrobotics jobby.

I currently use a cheap and cheerful wireless router that I won't tell you the make of cos it was purchased from a different company to aria and it's branded with their name so I can't tell you the name without advertising that company. (*edit*) actually aria stock the same router only it's 'unbranded'. It's the safecom £40 jobby. Cheap, cheerful, VERY reliable, good wireless range and securing it is easy peasy.

Essentially - you have two choices with domestic standard wireless routers - use a cheap and cheerful one so if / when it goes pop it doesn't hurt the wallet or use a relatively expensive one that's got a very very very good write up and good user reviews.

I've heard of some people having very good d-link or netgear routers (I had a fantastic d-link wireless cable modem/router) but unfortunately the volume of reviews on D-Links and my experiences with netgear preclude me ever wasting money buying either make ever again.

The good thing as a consumer at the moment is that wireless routers are cheap as chips compared to how much they were.

Question: How far are you away are you from the wireless router?

Question: What kind of wireless adapter are you using?

My router is next door to me, i have a crap D-Link Wireless Access Point, the wireless has WEP enabled to 128bit encryption i think. Its not my ISP as we the other pcs in the house are all fine when i check, most of the time the other pcs are turned off so don't say thats my problem lol.

Its really annoying because everyday i have to right click my wireless and click Repair at least 5 times ad ay !

    FFS !

My wireless adapter i have no idea, i think its something like Marvel or something i honestly carnt remember.

I had/have the same kind of problem.

Im using a MSI router which connects through 2 doors and is only around 15 metres away from my Wireless adapter.

I was using a USB 3COM wireless adapter, and it kept cutting out my internet once i played games.

I then tried a PCMIA 3COM wireless adapter which improved but still sucked.

Im now using a DLINK wireless adapter and it works pretty much fine.

So i would try a different Wireless adapter.

    or

Try playing some games in the room with the router and see if it drops out then.

have you tried changing the channel on the wireless router? download a program called netstumbler (free), and do a scan. It will show you all the wireless networks nearby and what channel they are on. Then pick a channel that isnt used, or has another used channel next to it. ie, if there are 2 other networks in range, and they are using channels 2 and 6, dont choose 3 or 5. Choose channel 4, and it will reduce interference - there is some overlap of frequencies even on different channels.

Or, just try a bunch of different channels, as it could be something else interfering, like a microwave etc...

Can you move it to another room? I had exactly the same problem with a wireless range extender - its kept dropping the signal, during large file transfers particulary. Moved it from the kitchen area and it hasnt had any problems since.. Worth a try anyway!
