Hehe toys  yes well it is christmas, and i am very generous when it comes to buying me presents at christmas.

    Stock speed is 2.4ghz

Well 1M superpi is around twice as fast as the oppy.

Cpu score for 3d06 on the oppy was around 1900.

So yeah quite a big power increase

    those are some good numbers..

I wish I'd had the money to buy a better board for my 6400. The highest I can get out of it with this motherboard is 2.4ghz. I know its capable of more than that, as its rock stable and that at stock voltage too.

Its a problem with the motherboard tho. Noone who owns one can get it to post above 299mhz fsb without setting the pci bus to sync'd instead of locked. and I dont want to risk my data! All it will take is a bios update!

But yeah, keep us posted with what you get out of it - there should be a bit more in it yet!

Anyway - heres something to aim for

Cheers Aaron i'll be aiming for around 3.5ghz or 400mhz fsb today so expect some updates soon (i don't expect much higher than that till the new ram turns up), pity about your mobo, what make / model is it? I know those 6400's are good for 3+ghz too a couple of chaps i know on another forum have had well over 3ghz 3.4 iirc. Though i totally understand your reluctance to push the pci bus.

Its an ASRock ConRoe945G-DVI, so its a bit of a budget board anyway, but I thought it would have a bit more potential in it than it really does.

    oh for a bios update.....

Yeah not a fan of asrock personally, you aren't the first person i have heard about whos had issues with one of their mobo's. Fingers crossed they bring out a decent bios update.

Water, thermaltake 745 setup, though i am only currently using a single rad, it comes with a single and dual rad so i can add the other rad in should i feel its needed.

Decent water cooling would definately be better than the best air cooling but my water setup is by no means \"top end\" and i would expect a scythe ninga / tuniq tower or similar quality heatsink to get close to my cooling though it is set to \"quiet\" mode and i have alot left on the fan speed.

I can definately recommend the 745 / 735? kit for beginners if you were toying with the idea.

3.6Ghz - nice place to stop!!

    What are your temps like?

PP, I may be about to teach you to suck eggs, so apologies if I am! The thing to remember about watercooling is that its still about taking heat away from the cpu and dumping it into the air somewhere else. You'll never be able to achieve lower temps than your ambient room/case temp (depending where you have the rad situated).

One of the main advantages for watercooling is that it is far more efficient at removing the heat and so you are able to get the lower temps. It's normally quieter too, using only 1 or 2 fans on the rad to get the same effect as using many many more fans (vacuum cleaner noises ) with purely air cooling. Its good fun tho

    Hehe thanks i thought so

According to \"core temp beta\" ( linky ) which is highly regarded as the most accurate temp reading prog as it uses the sensor on the cpu die the temps are high 50's at 100% load which is getting a little high but no where near the shutdown temp of 85c. I am seriously considering adding the extra rad in the loop now though.

Oh and don't you believe water cooling systems are any quieter than air cooled setups, they can be but aren't always.
