Default Help needed building a new PC please!!

    Hi People,

I am in dire need of a new PC my spec at the moment is a P3 933Mhz, ouch i hear you say!! ops:

It can just about play Counter strike source! (very badly 15fps) I also use several music progs e.g Reason/ fruity loops etc and the machine can just not hack it :x
After a lot of head scratching searching for this and that, this is what I have come up with.

I already have 2 dvd drives LG 4167b and LG HSA22 so I dont need any more of those.

I have a Radeon 9600 pro which was good once! not sure wheteher to try the Nvidia route this time? :? I think i will get back into gaming again, just haven't been able to run anything  let me know your comments.

Apart from the memory being wrong?

    The one you've selected there is 184-pin DDR1, you need 240-pin DDR2.

    Alternatives:

    OR

    Depending on your budget.
    Rest looks absolutely fine.

Unless i am mistaken that memory is DDR where as the asus p5b requires DDR2 other than that it looks fine. Look to get some 6400 rated memory or better.

Isnt that ram a little extreme for your system, im not sure your motherboard will do it justice.

Save yourself £50 and go for the

    DDR2 PC6400 TWIN2X2048-6400C4D

Just my opinion anyway. Unless you want to put a better motherboard in

Yes i agree with you both.

After some more searching I see that guys are using two hdd's one wd raptor for gaming/os and a standard sata2 drive for storage. I take it this is just down to speed whilst gaming?

Not sure either to go for the E6400 retail?

What are your thoughts of getting a DX10 compatible gfx card now like the BFG GeForce 8800 GTS? Cant see me upgrading after this for a while!!

Also can I load my existing legal copy of XP home onto my new system, or do I need a new copy?

Can i run XP x64 on this new system?

They will be usng the raptor/raptors as the boot disk probably though maybe for games, personally i think they are a waste of money and highly over rated as they are expensive and noisey yet ony allow you to boot a few seconds quicker or be a few seconds quicker onto a game server.

Can you afford it? If so why not go for it

Yup though you will need to revalidate and possibly phone up to get it validated.

if you upgrade to the E6600 and a 8800 gfx card your building a pretty similar system to what i shall be building in january.

im still deciding if i want a 74gb 10k drive for my O/s as im building a silient system that can be left on in the same room i sleep in, and these are meant to be noisey. But then overnight the o/s files wont be used much just the storage drive for downloads

    hmmm choices.
