Had a chance to use the X79 mobo and i7 3820 for a bit now I definitely think that the OP should go for 2011 over 1155, that's coming from someone who has used both !!

I much prefer the X79 setup, I have gained full multi GPU x 16, Quad channel memory, Upgrade path to more than 4 core CPU's etc.

My temps are much better !! Idle temps are in the 20c's and load temps in the 70c's. Got this motherboard for £85, what a steal !!

You get two x16 2.0 lanes anyway with Z77 anyway.

As a side note, if that Haswell graph is confirmed 2011 might be a good platform to jump onto from new given their doesn't appear to be any increase in core count between the two.

When you run 2 cards on Z77 it drops to x8 / x8 whereas X79 is x16 / x16 if that makes sense?

The UD5 is in a different league to the MSI Z77 I was using. I always like to judge on personal experience, can honestly say LGA 2011 is much better than 1155, feels like a real step up in quality, there are lots of options for CPU's on these boards aswell, 8 core Xeon's can be picked up for like £200, seen some 6 core Xeon's that are unlocked? ;-).

    x8 PCI-e 3.0 lanes = x16 2.0 ones.

Yeah but if your running older cards.. PCI-e 2.0 x8 will be PCI-e 2.0 x8 lol.

So you can say well PCI-e 3.0 x 8 is equiv to PCI-e 2.0 x 16, but when talking literally the X79 has the advantage.

Based on my own experience of using '3770K + Z77' and 'X79 + 3820' LGA 2011 is the better option atm.

    Wut.

My point is that for your current set-up there isn't a bandwidth difference between Z77 and X79 as you're using PCI-e 2.0 cards, so its a bit tardy to try and make out that its a benefit of jumping platforms.

Whatever dude, take it easy .

But anyway, for the OP Based on my 'own experience' of using '3770K + Z77' and 'X79 + 3820' LGA 2011 is the better option atm.

your biased, you had a bad ivy chip. if you were comparing at stock versus stock maybe i'd be inclined to take you more seriously.

I type 90 WPM, Click Here to try

He's not overclocked this one yet - this one might be a dud! (Hope its not though Boom, would be real bad for you to have two)

Im not sure how I can be biased by owning both systems and picking the one I prefer? I really don't care if you take me seriously or not either lol. I was considering switching to 2011 after being disappointed with Ivy, when the X79 UD5 came up @ £85 I thought I would try for myself..

So yeah it's only my opinion that 2011 is the better option atm, the OP can do what he likes, if your happy with 1155 then it's all good .

Thanks guys i think after reading the entire thread I am going to go 2011 going to be going for this....

    https://www.aria.co.uk/WishList/dpEK...hIe7mDjENM-w,,

it is near enough the same as what I am willing to pay for a 1155 so i may as well go for that step up, now to decide on other little things

Looks good to me mate. I prefer Asus boards so I'd get the Asus P9X79 Pro, available for £185.99

Why do Aria now not sell the UD5 board, that by far would get my vote!

The MSI would be my second choice though.
