i like the thinking of the cost, get a decent HS on that and OCing is more then doable now the only thing is which mobo should i go for now i have the gigabyte GA-z77x,ud5h or the asus p8z77-v deluxe

Seb your on X79.. I could switch from MSI Z77 GD55 + i7 3770K - to - Gigabyte X79-UD5 + i7 3820 and have some change.. Would it be worth it? Better for SLI? memory bandwidth etc..

Would gaming performance be any better / worse?

Probably not. You'd be swapping to a slower chip than you're on now, especially true for gaming.

Yeah as above go 1155, I'd get the Asus Deluxe motherboard if not the Sabertooth.

If I could run the 3820 @ 4.6Ghz VS 3770K @ 4.2Ghz is the 3820 going to be a lot faster? My 3770k just won't stay stable higher than 4.2Ghz which is why im considering going to Sandy-E until Haswell..

Also will the extra GPU PCI-E lane bandwidth make any tangible difference to SLI?

Faster, probably - although you could always buy a better CPU cooler instead. Noticeable? I'd be surprised. As for GPU bandwidth it would be no different for your 480's.

My clocking on the 3770K isn't temp related, at 4.6Ghz the temps are fine, just won't stay stable, it was stable at first, either a bios revision or possible chip degradation? Either way it's not happy @ 4.6Ghz now, @ 4.2Ghz @ stock volts which is nice and cool and low power but id like at least 4.6Ghz clock to not limit my SLI GPU's tbh. I am getting less performance @ 4.2 than @ 4.6...

Other thing is whether Intel will release any more Ivy 1155 chips? Heard a rumour that a new chip was coming in Q3? How gutting would it be to switch to X79 + 3820 and then Intel roll out a new decent Ivy 1155 overclocking chip that doesn't get hotter than the sun ..

I've ordered a X79 mobo, now to find a decent priced i7 3820, will test which setup is best myself. (The price I am getting the mobo is part of the incentive, at full price I may be more hesitant to switch). I can't lie am disappointed with 3770K, it was ok @ 4.6Ghz but now I can't even get over 4.2Ghz !!

Haswell is still 9 months away, I don't wanna be using something im not happy with all that time. Sandy-E just seems like the better platform tbh, more features and hopefully the i7 3820 won't reach rediculous temps when overclocking . I'll be happy with X79 + 3820 @ 4.6Ghz..

Surely you just have a bad chip then?

No idea matey, don't wanna order another 3770K in the hope it'll clock a bit better, it'll still be hotter than the sun..

I fancied 2011 anyways, I much prefer the X79 mobo's tbh, so will give it a try at least. Haswell is still so far away and id prefer Sandy-E until then ya know..

If you have the extra ~£250 it will take to go 2011 sure, go for it. But you won't see any difference in benches let alone realistically tbh.
