    would this be a good system and would it work?
    AMD Athlon64 3800 Venice Retail
    Socket 939

    What do you want this system for? And there is a clash, DDR2 doesnt work with DDR, you would be far better off with AM2, completely future proff, let me show u an example:

    Crucial 1GB DDR2 PC4200 240-PIN
    CT12864AA53E

    ASUS M2NPV-VM nF430 Socket AM2

    AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Retail AM2

    250Gb Samsung / 7200 / 8 IDE HD250KD (dont go for maxtor)

    That is along the lines you seem to be thinking, but if you say a budget then we can show you the best choice.
