Wireless Signal Help

Due to living in a flat with others and having a wireless box in my kitchen I have to use WiFi for internet access on my PC. But my room is very poorly positioned for the Wifi signal and i get litle to no signal in my room and need help. There is no other signals interfering with it so this is purely a signal strength issue.

I cannot get a new box as the virgin one we use i believe is fairly good but what can i do to my computer to improve my signal. I currently have a TP-Link 300Mbs Wireless N Adapter.

Other than pointing the antennas directly at the box and making sure you have latest drivers I don't think there's a lot you can do is there?

You could add a homeplug network, have to do that myself for our games room because the wireless doesn't stretch that far for a good signal. If you get one don't skimp on a cheap make, you really do get what you pay for with homeplugs. My own personal preference is for Netgear.

Definitely change the router if you can. The Virgin Superhub is a pile of junk. Even a cheap used Netgear DG834Gv3 would probably be better, mine sure served me well.

Use 2.4GHz channels if you're using 5GHz. 5GHz does not project through walls and similar very well.

Next step: Homeplugs. Avoid wireless if you can help it.

Next step: Open a CMD window, type "pathping google.com" minus quotes. Observe packet loss values and report back. Note this takes some time (5 minutes or more).

I hear ya though buddy, I've had incessant WiFi problems on my side of the house since building my first computer. 2.4GHz channel gets interfered with like crazy over here, 5GHz channel is too weak. I have to change between channels depending on whichever is barely working at the time.

Definitely go for homeplugs if you can.. For me, wireless is a flakey last resort if nothing else works.

Just thought id throw this out - if your using a desktop with PCI antennas try moving it away from the wall a few inches, triples my signal. If not then homeplugs are indeed your best bet

Good point too actually. I have an extender cable that runs mine out onto the landing. Couldn't get any 5GHz signal before now I get 2 bars.
