When SLi was originally introduced they had to be absolutely identical, same manufacturer, same BIOS etc.
A later revision of the NVIDIA drivers removed that requirement so now they just have to be the same processor
e.g. a Gigabyte 7800GT and a XFX 7800GT should work together. A Gigabyte 7800GT and a Gigabyte 7800GTX will not
sell the 7800gt and get a better single card mate, 1900xt or 1950 something or other, 2 mid range(ish) cards just aren't woth the hassle of sli tbh mate.
