Default I'm sure you get this all the time but...

I'm looking to sell my laptop and purchase a desktop PC, I heard custom building is the way to go for good price. I'm not really up on the technical side of things, like what's good and what's not.

I'm looking to sell this HP Pavillion zv6000:

    # AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0 GHz processor
    # 1GB of PC2700 RAM
    # 128MB ATI Xpress 200m video (dedicated memory)
    # 8x Dual Layer DVD+/-RW drive
    # 15.4\" wide screen BrightView
    # 100GB Hard-Drive
    # Multi-card reader
    # Complete with minor cosmetic damage for uniqueness XD

Though, I'm not sure how much to sell it for. This is going to be a hefty chunk of my budget, I'm willing to spend £150-200 on top of it.

I'd like this PC to be able to play new games, not necessarily maxed, but I'd like them to run smoothly.

So if you guys and girls be absolutely awesome and do the following for me...you will be smexy.:

    a) Evaluate my laptop and recommend me a price to sell it at (and maybe where... eBay?)
    b) Spec out a new system for me

Oh, and this needs to come with Windows, Keyboard, monitor(17\" TFT please) etc.

    I await your replies!

    Dan

AMD preferably, and I'm happy with Home edition... if that's what you mean :S

Unless there's a considerable difference between Home and Professional.

As I said I'm not the biggest tchie when it comes to computer parts.

I trust your guy's knowledge.... my PC is in your hands. Haha.

I'll happily take intel if it's better. I was just told that AMD was 'the best'

I reckon your looking at around £400 for your laptop.
    _ _ _ _

Maybe try selling the laptop without the Windows XP Code, and using that on your new system?

    Depends on the screen. I'd say about £400 - £500 for max res of 1280x800, or £650 - £750 for 1680x1050.

    A couple of questions:

How well wll this do with games like Company of Heroes, COD2 and newer games like that?

How many USB ports will his have? and what determines the amount.

Does the mobo have an onboard network card, with erthernet?

Once again thanks for your replies!

Okay cant post much since im at work and internet is being really slow

it will have onboard ethernet yes!

it will perform quite well on those games, probably medium settings wouldrun smooth and nice

but maxed might cause some problems

if you put £150 towards it and get another 1GB ram and a 7800 or 7900 then it wil be the next best thing for ur budget and before dx10

    I've come up with this:

    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200 Retail AM2 2.20GHz, 1000MHz FSB, 1MB, 64 Bit Socket AM2
    £106.64 1
    ASUS M2N-E nF570 Socket AM2 PCI-E / Gb LAN / DUAL CH DDR2 / SATA(II) RAID / 7.1CH AUDIO / RAID / ATX MOTHERBOARD
    £54.45 1
    Aspire Discovery Black No psu 4 x 5.25\" / 2 x 3.5\" / 4x3.5 Standard ATX / Baby AT / Micro ATX Front Usb 2.0 and Firewire 2x
    £52.00 1
    Crucial 1GB DDR2 PC4200 240-PIN CT12864AA53E x2
    £69.95 2
    250GB Western Digital - WD2500JS
    £44.95 1
    XFX GeForce 7600GT 256MB PCI-E 28-bit GDDR3 Mfr# PVT73GUGE3
    £91.58 1
600W Super Silent ATX Power Supply 12cm Quiet Cooling, 20+4 ATX Connector for 100% Motherboard Compatibility & SATA Connector!
    £14.90 1
    LiteOn 16x DL DVD-RW+RAM Black
    £15.95
    Dell 17\" flat TFT monitor 1704FPTs D/G Grade A 30-day warranty
    £99.00 1
Microsoft Comfort Curve Desktop P/N B2L-00045
    £12.45 1

    750-ish total, inc VAT

I wanted a dual core processor for multi tasking. Is this a good idea or will it be better with a single core and upgrading the graphics card instead?
