I picked up a 6950 XFX Double D for £170 and spent the rest on better bits
7850 without question, decent stock and excellent OC performance, but the clincher is the lower temps, noise and power draw for the same performance. Plus you have to think there will be more headroom moving forward for the 7850 being newer tech.
7850 for the win, or if you can stretch to it, a 7870..

At current prices I reckon the 7850 still represents a better bang for buck than the 7870 as it is almost 50% more expensive.

Indeed but it would be pretty safe to say it will be like the current AMD cards may be slighty worse or slighty better but it will effect their price and special offers when it arrives. In the meantime plenty of amazing offers on old 40nm cards may tempt some buyers but the smart cash looks at 28 dues to extra features and VRAM in many cases. A growing list of games would play great on a 570 but would look better on a 7850 2GB. And if the 670 is £300 after launch that's going to temp alot of people and we may see the 7970 hit £300 as well. If we really see 670-7970 for £300 that mega power for the cash (that would also effect the mid range cards prices as well so 7850 2GB should then below £150).
