  • Ubuntu 18.04 default desktop to switch from Unity to GNOME

Decision took me by surprise here, had to double check it wasn't a late April Fools joke but it is actually true.

Good riddance... Unity is the reason I gave up with Ubuntu.

I've got a mate who's going to be peeved, he's just about gotten used to Unity

I'm surprised by this too. I don't really see it as good news though as GNOME3 isn't any better than Unity in my personal opinion and Canonical are likely to theme GNOME3 to behave like Unity. I wouldn't be surprised if their decision was largely driven by Linuxes slow departure from Xorg and Canonical not wanting to port Unity to Wayland since their own competitor, Mir, has flopped.

In any case a new desktop environment is only an apt-get away so it doesn't really matter much what they choose to ship by default.

That sentence could just as easily be converted to Windows-speak:
"Windows slow departure from explorer.exe and Microsoft wanting to port WSH to Win10 since Metro has flopped"

But I could just as easily add other Windows technologies there too, Powershell, Win32, Silverlight, ActiveX, WinStep, UserShell, OpenBlinds, Metro, explorer.exe, progman.exe, blah blah blah. all interchangeable in the above sentence.

My point is that Linux isn't any more complicated than Windows. People just grow up with Windows so don't realise how much complexity they've learned to deal with. Which is also the reason why Microsoft (and Apple) practically give away their platform to schools.
