        Why? This isn't about a new attack, it's about how malware hid itself on an already compromised server. For all we know the box could have been infected from an outdated wordpress install. So the real question is how the malware got on that box to begin with.

        To be honest, it's not even a new idea to hide it's network chatter over SSH's default port - I've been bundling non-SSL nor SSH traffic over those ports for years when I've wanted to hide real world network usage. It's a common trick. In fact you probably do the same with usenet on port 443.
