  • Phone for 11 year old?

Looking to get the boy a phone for his 11th birthday, android and pay as you go I suppose to stop him running up a huge bill, I don't think he would but just in case.

    Maybe 100 budget, any ideas?

hmm, 100 isn't much in phone terms - so you're probably looking at a refurb or a cex style purchase.

Moto G4 Play refurbs are then in price range
Please see thread, here for how post reports are dealt with.

Are you thinking smartphone or something literally just to make phone calls.

We're trialling an LG android phone at work at the moment - I think it's 80. Not super specs at all, but it runs ok, although we're only on day two.

Yeah pretty much just to make phone calls, I think having an it andriod smartphone probably is a must, otherwise his mates re just gonna take the **** out of him at secodary school if we get him one of those purpose build phone calls only ones, but otherwise spec wise its not so important. He has a tablet at home he can use to watch youtube and stuff and I am not actually all that keen on him having a phone he can do whatever with.

I need to have a trawl through the various pay as you go providers and see what is what. The idea of him having a phone is mainly to use it as a volountary tracking device lol - so as he gets older we can get hold of him and visa versa, but more for emergencies rather than general use. Hes not old enough to really need it for socialising etc on - plus I am not paying for that either - hence PAYG.

Looking around, there are plenty of options in the ~100 slot. One recent word of warning I saw is that anything other than a known brand like of of those unknown Chinese clones is likely to arrive with all manner or dodgy carp installed.

At least his mates don't insist that you are subhuman if you don't use an iThing.

Pity Google decided to dash upmarket with its Nexus range. A Nexus 4 lookalike would costs about 100 these days.

My sister has gone through 4 Wileyfox phones this year, all broken with various issues, SIM stopped working, screen stopped working, touchscreen stopped working. Pain the rear to replace a phone every few weeks. You get what you pay for.

She must be dropping them or using them as dishcloths or something then...

This one has been rock solid so far, as have all the other ones I know of in use at work and within my circle of friends..

I think AndyN even has one?

Also, the iPhoneX would suggest otherwise..

Elephone A8 can be found for 50 and one arrived in the office today. We are planning to send them out without sim to showcase the app in the offices are the clients who are using it.

Really snappy little device - can't go wrong. Whether you can get one in time, another matter!
