  • Excellent write up. I now want to go to Manchester and try that ride one day looks fun. I'll maybe skip the nettle face and all the punctures if that's an option though

    • Some of you may already have seen this on Strava, but my biking holiday has been cut short by a broken collar bone.

The hospital were also worried I might have damaged a lung and wanted me x-rayed asap, didn't have time to wait for the painkillers to kick in so they cut me out of my padded compression top (gutted, that was expensive. Haha)

Anyway I was given the all clear, but kept in for several more hours so they could do a second round of checks later in the day just to be sure.

The doctor I was seen by advised me to get it operated on when I get back to Oxford because the bone is now sticking up quite a bit and could cause issues later on if it's left like that.

The plus side with surgery is that I'd be out of the sling in 3-5 days post-operation as opposed to 6-8 weeks if it's left to heal naturally, so that's definitely the route I want to take.

Luckily it was all on film as I was having a pretty good run up until the crash!

Basically went off a big drop (it looked bigger in real life I swear) and nose dived a bit as it was higher than I thought, which I might have got away with if it wasn't for the massive rock at the bottom which stopped my front wheel dead and sent me OTB into the edge of the track.

This trail was graded 'Black Plus' with the only grade higher being 'Pro Line'. Just so you know, at the end you hear two clicks/cracks, one is my fork bottoming out, the second is my collar bone snapping in half...

                  • Ooouchy

It's that bit of bone below the collarbone that they would've worried about.
Hope the op goes well mate, I'm sure they will operate and you'll be back soon!

                          • Thanks for the well wishes guys, already got an appointment arranged at the trauma clinic in Oxford for first thing Monday morning when I'm back home.

Also while I was cleaning up my helmet to pack it away earlier I realised why I had such a headache after the crash, looks like I'll be needing a new lid as well as new upper body pads...

Indeed, that bit of bone was the main reason they kept me in for a second round of checks as they were worried that was the cause of my right lung being 'quiet' under the stethoscope.
