  • Power cord fuse ampage

    amperage**

    Hello,

I've bought a XFX 450w PSU, and it came with an EU power cable not a UK one. Not much of an issue as I know kettle plugs are kettle plugs and I have a few lying around, though I'm not sure about how many amps are needed.

My Corsair TX850 V2 has a 13 amp fuse in it, a cable I found lying around has 10 amps and the XFX EU one has 16 amps in it.

How many amps should be in a power cord for the XFX PSU?

Most UK plugs are 13A and under. Even the high wattage PSUs are only 13A. Put it this way, I can run 3x Corsair 1200W PSUs at high load off an extension and they won't blow a 16A between them.

Rough estimate - a 450W PSU running at UK 240V, will be around 1.9A usage. You could run several of those PSUs off a single 13A fuse!

And would be going overkill and, say, getting a 10amp cable have a negative effect on the PSU? Or does it just give head room for future uses?

Should be fine, most of them are 13A anyway!

That PSU will never take that many Amps anyway, it would be a burning pile of rubble if it did!

            3A or 5A fuse
I've not failed. I've just found 10.000 ways that don't work!

First - Throw away the cable with a 16amp fuse in it, DO NOT use it, even through an adapter.

Secondly - I would be surprised if you needed more than a 5amp fuse in that little PSU

Third - Not all 'kettle' leads are made the same, some have cheap crappy cable, not rated more than 3 or 5 amps, they shouldn't have, but some from china and alike have slipped through, always check for kite mark or similar eu marking

Right o' - I had mentioned it to Flubit, so they contacted the supplier and got the UK cable sent to me yesterday, and it arrived today...I would prefer giving my uncle a new cable rather than an old one I happened to have lying around, so it's all good now.
