  • New desktop build for friend, no games

I built a friend of mine a dekstop for his business a few years ago and it's been great. He now wants one for his house for the wife and kids to use.
It's only web browsing, word processing use etc. No games or anything like that. Budget for the PC of about 400 i would say as he needs other things like a monitor and speakers but dont worry about that, i can give him the choices on those.

Would an i3 be ok for this? Skylake, Haswell or Ivy? I don't keep my eye on these things enough these days to know what to go for.
I will use an M.2 SSD of some kind like i did in a previous build as i was so easy. Does this limit me on processor choice?

    Cheers
    Mat

You could opt for an AMD APU will be cheaper than an i3 and will allow a little gaming if the opportunity arises... eg....

Cheers guys. Managed to spend more time looking at the spec. The M2's seem to be expensive for what they are still sadly. As I'm on a budget with this one it might be better to go for a normal SSD as i can get 500gb for the price of a 256 M2 drive.

        AMD? No thanks

Shooting yourself in the foot for a budget build with no dedicated card.

Not really... it's not for gaming, so why do you need a dedicated card? The onboard GPU can handle 1080P video playback without a single issue, and even Sandy could handle that.

i would look at something like that, see about swapping the cpu for an i3 and ssd?

Limiting yourself unnecessarily there... I have 2 PCs based on APU... an A10 7870k media pc and the other an A10 6800k..with an AMD 380x games/surfing PC for the shed!! and both are flawless ( My main gamer is Intel though )
