  • Struggling to find a z77 board to find my needs (pcie 16x 8x 4x ???)

I have an issue where if the pcie slots are to close i cant fit my crossfire cards.

Like sat pcie in slot 1 and 2 and pcie 2 in slot 3 and 4. i need it to miss a slot between

I have a 290 with kraken cooler and the fan and pump tubes push the other card down too much i cant get it in the socket.

The second card is a tri x one and it cant go on the top socket because of the bracket on the back of the kraken.

So im thinking new mobo, or kraken and watercool the other 290 which works out about the same price.

But im strugging to understand pcie slots. My current board has 3 slots and it seems to go 16x 8x 4x. I cant use slot 2 so im having to use slots 1 and 3. So im asuming this is were my **** poor performance for crossfire is coming in.

So i have been offered a friends board in trade but the slots are 8x and 4x I think. Its ahrd to deterin i dont quite understand.

I have also been offered a nice fatality pro z77 board which i think would suit my needs but its gonna cost me 80 for it.

Can someone tell me how crossfire works with 8x or 4x or how it changes when u put 2 cards in because its confusing the hell out of me. All 3 boards linked below in the order mentioned.

Thought i would add for anyone who did not see the original thread. But On valley benchmark a single card and my 3570k were hitting low scores from 1600-1800, and with dual cards it was above 1800 between 2000.

So not sure the issue. Open to solutions lol

And i used 3d guru driver cleaner and installed the latest stable drivers 15. i was on the latest no whql ones which were 16.2.1 i think. And it didnt ge

Personally i'd bin the xfire setup then, and get a single monster card, Fury, or 980ti

Yes future of mutli card GPU is under threat, because DX12 and how MS are handling windows store games, placing stipulations about games not running exclusively in full screen mode which is death bed for multi card solutions, because CF and SLI do not work in windowed mode.

http://www.pcper.com/reviews/General...icrosoft-Store Interesting article. Talks about FRAPS or other recording software been blocked turning PC gaming into locked down Xbone style.

Well i reinstalled all the mobo drivers and went to the latest stable amd which was crimson 15.12 and i see a little jump. Getting over 2k on valley and 2k on heaven but i think it should be higher. both cards are set at 1000/1300 which they both handle seperatly just fine.

It actually made assassins creed syndicate run worse with xfire. I think single card might be a good solution. I know its never a good time to buy a gpu especially now. Fury and 980 ti is a little out my price range and for the 300 mark i think id be able to get a 390 8gb which altho would give me 4gb more its not much more powerfully than what i have.

true but i need something just now for playing games. Im in the mist of turning the spare bedroom into a workout room / office. Missus dont like the pc in the living room. So been doing that all week.

Looking to get it all set up and just sit and game. Got lots to catch up on. Think i might sell both 290s and get a 390. Least it will be quieter and cooler and have more ram. And when the new gpus eventually drop sell that and just save and hopefully i have enough for a flagship

I'd just sell those cards and get a 980ti, probably wouldn't cost much extra.

Crossfire, more heat, more noise, more power consumption, rubbish drivers, more faff, mirrored memory, can't remember the last time I sold a crossfire/SLI rig.

Yeah in fact, boat loads in the mining era! Although don't think these were even sli/xfire just tons of cards on x16 riser.

isn't DX12 meant to stack the RAM of the GPU's instead of mirroring it? that could change the field again for older tech to become relevant until Pascal hits properly

Think a 980 ti is a little out my price range even if i sell these. I think im looking at 170 ish and 150 ish for either, cheapest 980ti is over 400 , and arent they only 4gb ?

Think ill get a 390 8gb, or a used 980. And wait for the new cards to drop.Gives e some saving time to save the pennies

                              980ti is 6gb.

On a budget i'd go single 980 4gb or single 390x 8gb, cost neutral once you've flogged the old 290s
