  • RAM upgrade for Gigabyte Z68MA-D2H-B3

Im running a Gigabyte Z68MA-D2H-B3 with a 2500k@4.4ghz + 4GB mushkin blackline. It's a pre-oc'd set I had got from aria as I couldn't be bothered with a complete from scratch build at the time.

Problem right now is the 4gb is a bit of a bottleneck, tbh its been so for a while. It's 2x2gb sticks so the best bet is to dump them and replace with 2x4gb sticks. I was hoping to throw in straight up replacement mushkin blackline but Aira and pretty much everyone else has stopped supplying them. I had seen aria with them down to like £70 a couple of months ago and quite frankly wish I had grabbed them then.

Any Idea if they are going to be restocked or if not what would be the best solution?

I need RAM with a low profile as the first slot is right up against the cooler and I need stuff with as little tinkering with voltages and bios settings as possible.

I hate OCing, all my old machines were oc'd and they were a mess, q6600 was the previous machine and it was just a headache.

Your motherboard can take 4 sticks, so personally I'd grab another 2x2gb with the same voltage, timings, and speed as the mushkins.

Your overclock may be affected, so you may need to just dial back the speed a little.

Overclocking is an art. It takes time to perfect.

By the way, you don't need to run your RAM in the slots closest to the CPU. It actually works better in the 2nd and 4th slots for whatever reason.

I'd ditch your 2x2GB, you can still get about £25 for it on eBay, and then grab 2x4GB of RAM.

Its actually in the 2nd and 4th slot, cooler is over 1 slot so its impossible to use all 4 slots either. It really is small profile ram or nothing as theres no way for me to actually fit anything else in the space available.

I don't mind a bit of tinkering, but mushkin blackline straight swap would be ideal.

Take off the cooler and install ram?

I think this is the same timings?
Can't remember what Mushkin Blackline had - was it 9-9-9-24 or 8-8-8-24 ?

              my 2 sets of blackline 1 set is 16GB (2x8GB) the other 8GB (2x4GB) have timings/voltages 9-9-9-24 1.5v

so any ram which has the same timings/voltage would be fine as either a replacement or an addition.

I have vague memories of the 2gb sticks having 8-8-8-24, and the 4gb and 8gb sticks moving to 9-9-9-24.

Need OP to confirm really, or they could just buy 2x4gb

My old mushkin blackline RAM that I'm getting rid has timings of 9-9-9-24 1.5V 3 x 4GB
I think only Aria have sold the mushkin in the Uk, no other supplier does

9-9-9-24@1.6v are the timings on my current 2x2gb sticks. As I said, I can tweak the memory settings in bios if needed. Corsair 2x4gb looks closest to what I need, i've seen the mushkin blackline on amazon but its shipped from germany.
