  • Looking for an affordable laptop for gaming/uni

Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a laptop for gaming(CSGO) and uni. I'm trying to stay under 500 and looking for something with ~17" screen.
I was also considering building a micro PC so I can take it away with me, but unfortunately screens can't fold... yet.

    Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

Gaming on a laptop, for under 500. There's a challenge.

Personally, I'd be looking AMD CPU, with a decent onchip GPU.
I suspect you would get more for your money than an Intel CPU plus dedicated card

That is a challenge indeed. I wouldn't really be expecting to game on a laptop on that budget, not with a 17" screen wanted too. Then again, I am not too sure. I don't do this whole PC gaming malarkey.

No chance for a 17" screen.

I got the laptop in my sig brand new 3 years ago for 473 and is only just managing games now. Best bet is suck it up and just find a 15" one.

Just keep on eye out on HotUKDeals for stuff or look on the specialist PC store, that's your best bet.

I've looked around at these recently too. As they said decent gaming laptops with reasonable GPUs start off in the 800-1000 ballpark and go up from there. At your budget you can maybe get something which can 'run games at a push', with a 950M or similar, but even there you'd find getting a 17" screen a push.

thats the main issue i had. MY one has a 1080p screen so anything less the 960m thats in there would be horrid. the 950/850/840 mobiles are awful for anything with remotely decent graphics.

i went to see one of my customers a few weeks back to help sort a few things with his new gaming pc that he spent nearly a grand on from lenovo.
Fixed all his issues and then his last one was that his mouse was really slow on far cry 4 so loaded it up with fraps running to show him and on medium he was running 8-10fps he'd bought a gtx 850 with a full HD screen all in one. And it was simply uncapable of running what he wanted but he had been sold it as a gaming system and had even told them what games he wanted to run.

you'd be surprised at how well CSGO will run on a lower spec gpu - turn down the details and you magically become a better shot as well

I found steam on 4 of the 12 budget office laptops I was recently given to data cleanse and refurb.

Counter Strike requires pure CPU grunt. A good GPU is not required to play it.
