  • Z97 or Z170, gaming CPU deliberations?

Which would you buy and why?

I'm thinking the 4590 with the 3.7 turbo be the best bang for the quid...

Value for money Haswell, or get on the current upgrade trail with Skylake. If I were buying now I would go for skylake for DDR4 future proofing I think, but I'm sure haswell will do fine, I'm still rocking sandybridge!

      FO4 all the ultra OCD.

I could just drop godrays to low this evening, and shadow quality to low/medium and see how it goes. Auto detects to high preset, which has many things on ultra, full AA/AF etc, could also drop the other settings to high.

Any excuse to force my hand on an upgrade I guess

I ended up buying a 6700 (non-K) in my ITX build. Not sure if I'll see any major real world difference from my 2500K @ 4.5GHz but should be a lot more efficient

It was cheaper than the current price by 20 though.

Should add, my main reason was the lower power draw in comparison to the K version. It boosts to 4GHz, which is more than ample for gaming. I thought about the 6400 or 6600 but got a bit power hungry. I think I mostly wanted it to feel like an upgrade from Sandybridge

Id go for the 4690K myself, keep it cool and calm for a while and if you need the extra computing power and can spare the power draw - OC the nads off it for free gainzzzzzzzzz

no point not going skylake now really. infact you would be stupid to not get the next batch of goodies it brings to the table today.

Agreed. Pointless going to a completely dead end platform to save a few pennies.

Thanks for thoughts, going to stick with the Q9550 now

FO4 ultra'd out, and simply dropped godrays to low, and shadows + shadow distance to medium. Perma butter 60 now.

Still preferred gaming in 1440p myself as its a nice step up visually and performance was still solid.

That'll change when cards come out that can cope with 4K properly though
