I can see this being thrown about on every forum for the near future every time someone makes the claim Linux is more secure than Windows..........

Got a niggling problem, wondered if I'm missing something obvious...

I have a SCO unix box and I want to create a single archive/backup file on a remote Windows machine.

This would be a fairly trivial task, however:

1) It must go over standard FTP (no sftp/ssh/scp/rsync).
2) I cannot use "tar" as it is unable to read the long pathnames on the filesystem.
3) The method cannot create a local file first, and then ftp over, due to lack of disk space on the source.
4) I must use standard unix utilities as new software would be hard to install.

If "tar" didn't complain of long pathnames, I would have already solved this as I can use the ftp command 'put "| tar cf - / | gzip" backup.tar.gz' which uses the output of tar/gzip and pipes it over ftp.

I've tried cpio, but due to the way it creates an output file I can't work out how to get it to output over ftp to a destination file.

Any ideas appreciated :D

95% sure I know this is doable, but...

Can I triple boot Win7 / Debian or Ubuntu / BSD on the same machine?

Any caveats I should be aware of ?

I was thinking...
1) Partition drive into 3 chunks
2) Install Win7
3) Install BSD
4) Install Debian/Ubuntu

I'm most familiar with Ubuntu so would install that last, giving me the most confidence it would detect and not muck about with the previous installs.

Then use GRUB from either 2) or 3) to select the O/S ?

Also assuming that any modern Linux can read/write NTFS fine - I'm certain Ubuntu can but not sure on the others.... If I put all filesystems as NTFS then Win7 install should have access to anything on the other O/S's right ?

Cheers!

hey all,

I've been trying to install my red alert game through playonlinux for the last few days - apparantly it runs well, no problems etc. However, because I am installing off a disc with securom on it, it doesn't work :(

iv seen a few fixes for windows, including

Look under HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE then SOFTWARE then MountedDevices. Right-Click this and choose PERMISSIONS highlight Administrator then look down under the ALLOW section and make sure the first two boxes are checked (Full Control and Read). If not, put checks in those boxes then hit ok.

I have tried to do this in wine but there isn't the option to change permissions, i'm assuming because I haven't started it up as administrator. Anyone have any ideas on how to do this? (by the way, if this is likely to invalidate the game or stop me from playing it online, let me know as I don't want to do that!). I've done a few searches but can't seem to find the answers...

Thanks!
