I currently don't have any Microsoft Points, and the GFW client seems very empty, execpt for a tiny selection of free demos and videos. So I was just wandering if it hides things from you that you can't afford? And what are the prices like for things you actually pay for? Is it worth it?

Dawn of War II and Fallout 3 use Games for Windows Live, dunno about any others.

I know that. I can see the ads for screenshots and trailers. Can you actually get games off of GFW using MS Points though? Or do you still have to buy them from retailers?

In particular, I've got my eyes on Red Faction Guerilla and FEAR 2. I know you can get those on Steam, but I'm not entirely sure whether I want them on Steam or GFW. I have more actual friends on XBox Live/GFW, but more internet friends (like the Aria group) on Steam.

I got a warning not long ago for setting up a Steam community for students at uni. Well, setting up the group was fine apparently, but I wasn't allowed to advertise it in the intranet, which I did. Only two people managed to join the group before the link was removed from the intranet. :( The group still exists though.

I have Dawn of War retail and Fallout 3 on steam. Both of them installed GFWL and you have to use it to play. Dawn of War retail also installed itself into Steam

Both games use GFWL AND Steam. Win/Win.

But can you buy them from Windows Marketplace using MS Points and is it a good idea to?

RFG and FEAR 2 are the games I'm most interested in at the moment. It'd be great if those do the same thing. That way, I can buy them retail, activate them on Steam, then have no worries about losing discs because I'll just re-download them from Steam.

I wouldn't buy anything from windows marketplace, I don't trust it and it's more straightforward to stick with steam where I have a large number of games.

I think usually when you buy a retail game that you can also get on steam, then you can activate it with steam using the key, but sometimes it says the key is not valid.

My opinion is that if you want them on steam then you buy them from steam, unless you are sure a retail copy will activate.

Steam can be more pricey than buying retail copies but you do get the ability to download your game whenever you like and there are no discs or boxes cluttering my room (if I had boxes for all the games I have I would have to rent two rooms!), for me it's worth a little extra.

Hmm, maybe I'll just buy them retail then. I have GTA IV, which you can also download on Steam, but you can't activate the retail copy on it. I would like to preorder RFG, but if I do that there's no guarantee until release whether or not I'll be able to activate it on Steam.

Can't you preorder RFG on steam?

(RFG looks good btw)

I can preorder RFG retail too! But yeah, that might actually be a better idea. It's just that little bit more expensive on Steam.

Edit: How do you preorder on Steam then?

Well I just checked if FEAR 2 CD keys are accepted by Steam, and they are, so I'll be getting FEAR 2 by retail and then activating. As for RFG, there's nothing about it on Steam yet except trailers. You can't preorder, unless I'm missing something because I've never preordered on Steam before. Steam doesn't say anything about RFG CD keys yet, so I might wait and see.

You can preorder on steam. You can only activate keys once the preorder finishes if i remember correctly.

Yeah if steam is offering preordering on that game then you download all the files before the release day and then on the day the game activates. Keep checking the red faction steam page for when you can preorder it.

I did beta testing on steam before it was released, I was one of the ones who moaned like mad about how crap it was & how it made gaming a nightmare....at the time it did though. It had more bugs than a VW Beetle derby.

I have to say that now they have got their act together & steam is one of the best apps on my PC.

What like is this games for windoze thing, any good?

It's basically windows trying to put xbox live on pc's. IMO it's not as good as steam.

Still nothing on Steam about it. It still says "Available 2009". Might just buy it retail...

Edit: Wikipedia says that RFG will support achievements and Live on GFW, but not Steamworks or achievements on Steam, so retail looks like the way to go...

Also, Prototype is tempting me...

It will be like Dawn of War 2 is. It uses steam AND GFWL. Steam keeps the game up to date, and GFWL manages friends and achievements.
