View Full Version : A nice recommendation please
I was bought a 5.1 Surround sound system for my PC from Aria a while back now & i'm not so sure if i'm keen on them anymore.
Can someone spec a good speaker set - preferably 2.1 that offers good sound quality for a nice price, preferably lower than £40.
I have an ASUS Xonar DS if it helps.
The Bose Companion 3 Series II is good but is a bit more than £40 unless you can get a set secondhand. With a £40 budget, I would suggest a set of JBL Creature III Computer speakers secondhand :thumb:

Probably impossible. What do you listen to?

Well just about everything - I like everything to sound good, music, games & movies - almost like a Cinema experience which i know is probablly impossible with 2.1 speakers. I'm, just not sure how i'd go about setting up a 7.1 system in my room.
The thing with low budgets is that the majority of speaker sets are the same low quality tech in different looking enclosures. My recommendation is either go secondhand or look for something reasonably old thats just had a replacement put on the market. I personally wouldnt go secondhand for the sake of warranty and as for finding good speakers on clearance im afraid aria isn't your best bet. Obvo i cant tell you where to go on here but any audio-specific shop will do (use the web not the shop for the best deals).
If you cant be bothered with all that aria have these due back in soon...although seriously the sub is gonna be terrible by the looks of it:

As much as I hate saying you need to spend more, well, £40 on speakers isn't likely to achieve a great deal. It certainly won't bring massive improvements over what you have already.
I've often wondered wheter some cheap active monitors would be better in this situation as they are more designed for near-field listening so ought to give better sound quality close up. The Behringher MS16's come in at £50 but can't vouch for them.

you can get Creative Gigaworks T20 for £50 odd if you have a quick google, they're always very well reviewed :)
Shame logitech stopped doing the X-540s and replaced them with some horrible set instead as you could quite often pick up a set of those for about £50. Unfortunately not a huge amount of decent stuff at the lower end of the price range now.
Haha ....
Was just about to post #
Creative GigaWorks T20 Series II
but NGR beat me to it...
There are not 2.1 but they are an excellent pair of spreakers ...I love mine...they sound just as good gaming as listening to music...and if you dig around you can find them for £42.00
