View Full Version : SATA Cables
Just a quick question, would a SATA 3 cable be able to work with a SATA 1 dvd drive?
Yeah i would guess they are all backwards compatible.

I have "backwarded" SATA cables without problem. The only problem could be if you "forwarded" and attached SATA II cables to a SATA III drive, but even there I would take claims of superior cables with a pinch of salt.
And using a SATA III cable with a SATA I drive connected to a SATA III connector would also work?

should work fine
It's all just electrical signals, so theoretically all cables should be inter-operable with the right connector. Anything that's sold as "SATA3" and is a bit more costly, is just the same cable but with a higher price tag.
The only exception is if the cable is either damaged or made in some new-fangled shiny way. Which 99.9% of them aren't.

This. Cable is cable, as long as it has the same connector it will work.
It's like how you can buy HDMI cables for £1 or £30, some people swear there is a difference but more often than not they are the exact same thing.
That's not really relevant in my case; im using the cables bundled with my Asus motherboard. As long as it works, it's ok with me :D
On a separate note, if I sleeve my PSU cables, does this void my warranty with FSP?

It might, but try giving them a ring because I know Corsair send out an extra set of cables if you want to braid them so it might work out better in your case.

You forgot the magic pixie dust that some makers sprinkle over their cables to make them a zillion times better.
I saw a youtube video by a well known reviewer comparing sata cables. No matter what they are labelled as they all seem to perform within a couple of percent of eachother

I have a sata cable here that makes a sata 1 drive as fast as a sata drive 3
True dat
My SATA cables came with my motherboard, using them on SATA III and a SATA III SSD, got over 500mb/s when first installed, so I doubt there is such a thing as a SATA III cable!

there are cables that are certified Sata III but all that means is they have been tested with Sata III
they are all the same really
