I`ve never owned a laptop or a netbook before.
I`m thinking about buying a samsung NC10 or a NC20...not really worried about playing the latest games, but would these netbooks be able to play the following games?
COD2
Medieval II Total War
Doom 3
If not a laptop...budget £500
Thanks
it want play doom 3 not because it cant because its a crap game :D
Nc10 is one of the best netbooks on the market  can be found for just over £300 i think? Is the screen a bit small for playing games on??
I have an NC10. It is a fantastic machine. I haven't played this type of game but someone here has.
A list of games.

Not sure how this has turned out - but I'd say netbooks are really not gaming devices.
They're okay if you're near a big monitor (at which point you'd have your main machine anyway) but the small screen makes them no fun for gaming :(
I've got an NC10 as well and personally I haven't bothered with games at all. Clock for clock, the Atom N270 is slower than today's Core based Celeron CPU, but where it excels is power consumption. I use one for lectures and internet use on the go and see as much as 8 hours out of it. If not for the games, I recommend the NC10 for it's 6 cell battery, 10" screen and near full size keyboard. A separate company is also offering 9 cell batteries and crucial offer a compatible SSD drive, which could push battery life upwards of 11 hours :)
I'm pretty much exactly the same as you, Mul - although a slightly earlier adopter with a 901 I use it the same way.
Basically go for a 10" with 6-cell battery - the 9" is just that little bit too small for most people (I have small hands, so I'm fine). The samsung is a nice bit of kit, I think I'd go for that if I were buying now :)
i have an NC 10 and love it. I did have an 8" Asus eeepc but found the keyboard too small for my fat fingers lol
I also have an NC10 and played a few games on it. It played COD OK but never tried COD 2 at all.
I did however install half-life and half-life 2 on it and the first one played OK and the second one was playable but was jumpy at times but only for a second or two.
I still only have 1GB in it so if you get one I would say upgrade to 2GB and they should work OK on it but I would do some more research first.
Oh I have also just installed Windows 7 Ultimate on it and seems to work OKish. I have only done little things on it like browsing the internet watching films and playing music. Going to have a proper crack at it over the bank hol.
Oh also when you drop it on its back left corner from about 4 foot in the air and the screen back panel pops off it’s fairly easy to pop it back on.
This was done on Saturday and up to yet I have seen no side effects from this. Was worried about the hard drive giving up after such a fall but up to yet fingers crossed its going OK.

Well wasn't that clever! :). Impressive that nothing has happened so far...probably of noticed something by now, depends on how much you use it though?
I'd never have thought of playing games on a netbook. Rumours are that Microsoft maybe releasing a netbook version of Windows 7 OS.
I've heard/read that Nokias new netbook are running a cutdown 7

Was thinking of getting the NC10, but i wanted to replace the HDD with an SSD, but replacing the HDD voids the warranty :(
Not gonna be much of a gaming device mate. Tried them both and they ain't pretty at games :-(
Don't expect too much for a netbook. It's design for Internet but not for gaming.
