Hey guys,

Not so important but I really want to set up a webcam in my house that I can access remotely.

I don't need it to record or anything, and I don't have a PC always on. I always need it to be cheap. I don't mind buying something that will do the job :)

Ideas on a postcard :D

How about this:

https://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Bargain+Basement/Z-Storage+Options+CCTV+1TB+DVR+2+x+outdoor+Cameras+? productId=47750

You should be able to access remotely...

Are you sure -

Network
Although this is an analogue CCTV solution, it has a killer feature in that it is network enabled. This feature means that if you connect it to your network you can view your system live from anywhere

Seems great but very expensive as I don't need most of the features :(

Just want to make sure the cats not destroying the living room!

If you have a spare android device with a camera you can use IP Webcam (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pas.webcam&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5wY XMud2ViY2FtIl0.)

I just use a normal web cam and YAWCAM (http://www.yawcam.com/) software. Job done. well mostly, you have to open port 8081 inbound but other than that, good to go.

Can you get webcams that connect via a lan cable directly to the router? Or will the camera using that software need to be on a pc thats switched on all day?

Would this work -

http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/Storage+Options+SON-IPC1+IP+Night%2FDay+%26+Pan%2FTilt+Camera+inc+11n+ 300mbps+Wireless+%26+Ethernet+Port+?productId=4400 5

Do you need a web server, or can I just access it remotely by using my normal internet? Thanks

You need a network camera. Plug into router and open ports and away you go!

And yes the one you posted would work

I know many routers have a USB port, in most cases though I don't think it would work like that though as there would be no drivers to run the camera. I might be wrong, there may be a router (or possibly custom firmwares?) designed to do that...

Can't say I've ever really thought about it before the other day, but if I could find a router that could do that I'd make 20% profit on just setting the thing up for someone who's recently asked me a similar thing :)
