View Full Version : Website
Good Morning :D
Building websites has never been a skill i've really ever needed to learn.
But as we have been so quiet at work recently, i thought why not try and learn an extra skill in the mean time?
In the past everytime i have looked into it, i have lost interest in days.
So i would like to know the best ways to start building a website?
All i'm after is something simple, like a blog.
But i can't stand the restrictions people like MSN and Google place on there's.
_ _ _ _ _
Tools i have which i can use our:
Microsoft Publisher 2003 or 2007 (basically the same)
Go Live (Means working on the iMac, Never used it)
Photoshop (Never used it)
Basically any Windows program
_ _ _ _ _
Anyone have any ideas or advice they can give me?
Or inspiration of a site to make?
Thanks Alex. :D
My advice would be to learn HTML and CSS the hard way - by editing the source code. Go download HTML-Kit and play with it. The best starting places would probably be:
http://www.w3schools.com/ (everything you need to know about HTML & CSS)
http://www.oswd.org/ (lots of very good sample designs you can use as a base - all open source, so use them as much as you want as long as you credit the original author in the comments of your HTML)
And above all, ask someone here if you've got any questions :)
EDIT: if you want to run blogging software, that means using a dynamic site (ie one where you don't have static HTML, but rather have some programming code which generates HTML on the fly eg from information held in a database). That's more difficult - learn HTML first, then go learn something like PHP or Ruby once you've got the hang of it.

myspace is the devil and it can go to hell!! :x
:P
Thanks LJ, some good links.
Basically what i want is a simple site, where i can upload pictures with captions.
Maybe write a couple of reviews on products i have used.
Nothing fancy.
I dont want a online diary :x

WYSIWYG....
Type into word....Hey I made a website and save the doc as .html hey presto you made a web site...!
Forget word, and aim a bit higher with Frontpage, nick sites from the net and edit them to see how they are layered. and source coded.
have a bash at Dreamweaver Flash and a nice little proggie called swish max.
Find free templates on the net and tinker with em, get some free BB php templates and have a good play, with layouts etc.
Dont go charging at ASP Java or Xtml or other stuff thats gonna bust ya noggin...
Bearing in mind these are low pain, approaches to web building.
Regards Mighty...

[quote:cf37b81ba7=\"ÈL ® ö B ì Ñ\"]Yer I have this website ripper program, just put the name of the site and how many links etc you want it to copy, and it rips the the whole thing :D
Don't think it gets private files such as config.php but it gets enough so you can have their whole site and just edit it.[/quote:cf37b81ba7]
I would be very interested in that i am looking for a new template for my Site...
As to the question in hand..Belso I self taught myself Frontpage while on the sick from Work one day im not that good but after a few hours playing around its really quite easy.. Here is my site at the moment for my gaming Clan made in front page.. Like Mighty_Jah said just go to somebody elses and rip it and change things around..
www.egn-clan.com
Now i have tried to use the PHP, Xoom, E107 and all the other CMS style sites but i had nothing but problems with with them all so i went back to trusty HTML.

That site's not bad, given that it's built in FrontPage. However, I've got a suggestion - remove the parent frameset. You've got a frameset, with only one frame in it - that's not really a good way to do things....among other reasons, it's harder for search engine spiders to navigate your page (if they find it at all).
Sorry to sound Thick LJ but you lost me at \"That site's not bad, given that it's built in FrontPage. However, I've got a suggestion\" .. ...... Do you have a Etcha Sketch you can draw me a Diagram on thats about as much knowledge as i have in Web design.. What is a Parent Frame set... Once again sorry for sounding like a Thicko....

For what you want, that looks perfect. You might need something else for an image upload though. Then again you could just use FTP and make an image directory. :D
We use wordpress for our site. http://www.swfmania.co.uk
You can get so many different templates and styles and then customize them.
You love me, no?
