View Full Version : DDR2 PC2-8500 Query
Just bought 2x2GB sticks of OCZ 8500 Reaper RAM, getting the blue screen of death sometimes, I have an ASUS P5Q SE mobo, does anyone know why this would happen? In the ASUS manual its shows it takes 1Gb sticks of this memory type but doesnt mention the 2gb sticks. Not an expert on memory but cant see why this should matter.
This could be due to anything although usually memory or psu.
to test the memory download memtestx86 and run a test on each stick to establish theres not a fault with either stick.
also could you advise what psu you have too as it could be theres not enough power from there.

Thats a good point, im not sure of the make of the PSU as it came with the case(cheap £40 case), think its at least a 400watt one, but I think its 500watts, does it matter on the brand of a PSU?
I will download MEMTEST when im off work next, actually scan computers recomended that last night, havnt had a chance as im at work permantently(so it seems) for 4 days..
Sounds like from what your saying your problems gonna be the psu....
Cheap psu's are NEVER what they say they are, eg a 400w psu is usually a 250-300w psu that peaked at at 400w during testing, running 4 hdd's that psu is gonna fail big time.
what your gonna need is a Branded PSU this should solve your problems.
go for something like this OCZ 600w Stealth Extreme (http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/OCZ+600W+StealthXStream+PSU+?productId=26933).
currently on offer too. :)

never fitted a psu, always got a case with one built in, are they easy enough to fit? will they fit any case? or are there different sizes? thanks
Fitting a psu is easy if you unscrew the screws from the back of the case holding the psu in place it would just slide out. then slide in the new one and screw into place reconnect as you would if the psu came with the case :) easy
Has you just got the Blue screen of death from changing the memory?
Did it work fine before hand?
Try putting your old RAM back in and see it still works, won't be the PSU then.

I bought the RAM when I had my ASUS P5B Deluxe Mobo on the understanding it would work when overclocked but had all sorts of problems, so then decided to upgrade the mobo to the P5Q SE which should take it, but this mobo will not take my old RAM as its a 5300 667mhz which is not compatible. Anyway I will run the MEMTEST program 1st then decide on a new PSU, wife wont be happy as spend enough on the mobo and memory...
Why isn't your old memory compatible???
PC2-5300 @ 667 Mhz will work on a P5E-SE.

your right, it will work, silly me...its a P5Q SE by the way
Reaper requires quite high voltage to work you may find the bios isn't set properly.
Go into bios and set memory voltage to 2.1v as per the specs, assuming you haven't done so already.

Well ive bought an Xilence 600W Gaming Edition PSU and also changed my mobo to an ASUS P5Q-E as it says in the memory vendor list that it will take 2GB sticks of OCZ 8500, will be installing these tmrw, I will check the voltage in the BIOS also. Will et you know the results.
And the results were?
Assuming your sig is right it worked lol.
