View Full Version : Windows XP or VISTA
Hi
Want to upgrade my system but not sure what version of Windows to go for?
I have Windows XP Pro SP3 32bit and want to go 64bit...
Windows XP Pro 64bit
Windows VISTA 64bit Home Premium or Ultimate
Using for games and music, should I wait until I go AM3 and get PC1066 8GB or would it run fine on the specs I have...
Thanks if you can help.
Definitely steer clear of XP64.. I'd go (and I did go for..) Vista 64 :)

I would avoid xp64, either go for Vista 64 or wait for Windows 7 64 bit
Whats Windows 7 like? is it worth getting or just go for Vista should I upgrage to 8GB or would my system be fine the way it is?
I'm gonna go for the OEM version (just can't afford to buy the full version) how does changing Hard Drives and such go? You still need to activate VISTA? do you need to phone them and stuff...

Microsoft are pretty good at providing activation to replacement hardware even on OEM versions.
Failing that there are other ways of by passing activation (google slic table)
What about using XP Pro 64bit on a second hard drive, would I still need all the drivers and stuff? and what would be the big problem running on a second harddrive?
YOu can dual boot easy enough,
Just partition the hard into a C: & D: drive then pick which is XP and which is Vista then when they are both loaded you can pick which to load at startup, easy.
Activation for Vista is simple as, when you install just click the automatically activate Vista online.
Although if i were you i would look around for Windows 7 beta, (maybe someone on here will lend you the activation key) and use that for a while.
The free Windows 7 will last you until July or August then it stops and the real one comes out in Sep/Oct time.
Save you £75 and just use a free O/S, no point getting Vista then Windows 7 comes out and spend another £75.
Windows 7 is just a better, faster, shinier Vista.
You system is already overkill for Vista so its fine.
Stick to XP 32 bit! :P
Vista is annoying and windows 7 is a service pack

+1
although the beta has finished you can still get a key from m$. just need to find a location to download the beta from.
Personally windows 7 rules, it's like vista but better and loads quicker.
i'm running my systems soley on windows 7 beta until it becomes full release.
If you really dont wannna run on a beta os then get vista 64 home premium, no need to pay extra for the ultimate version and you wont be disapointed.

Forgot to add my second Maxtor 30GB HDD so dual booting is no prob, will be getting an 80GB to install XP and for stuff that only works with XP. I just want a 64bit system to use all my ram and I want to upgrade to 8GB since it's so cheap at the moment. XP for music and older stuff, VISTA or 7 for Games and internet...Ok then if I get my second HDD install XP on that download Windows 7?

Yes use windows 7 and save yourself cash :)
When you say music though do you mean playback of music or making? If playback then windows 7 all the way.
What you'll find is that anything that works in xp generally works in vista/windows 7 if it doesnt just run in compatability mode and all sorted.

Making music with like Cubase and VST Intruments (plugins) just found out my BT Voyager 105 modem (USB) don't work in VISTA and there are no drivers for it (not sure if the XP drivers will work with it) so gonna have a problem there maybe need to replace it.
xp drivers work in windows 7 i believe, would have to google that though.
Just as a thought can Windows 7 be downloaded then put onto a disc (ISO) or do you need to update from XP I would rather do a fresh install...
I find 99% of everything in Vista to work really well for me.. But Vista for recording music is an absolute nightmare. There are threads about it all over the internet - Its just impossible to get it to behave, so I still have XP on my music recording box :)
Thats because vista disables any (digital i believe but maybe analogue too) audio input.
Nice one M$ taking it upon themselves to criplle our hardware.
I assume this is what you mean and not ripping cd's?
Yeah - Trying to record an acoustic guitar track using the line in, on the sound card, which would be analogue - so if what you say is true (and I'm not doubting it!) then its both analogue and digital..
Yeah i believe it to be so.
Tossers M$!!

So do you also
The only quarrel i have with vista is the layout of folders and the start menu, you cant get it to work how you want before you ask

I'd agree with that...
But thats its, and that is the reason i have completely stopped using it, as soon as i get 4 GB ram however, that may just change
Yeah but everyone always says "they cant get it to work how they want!" yet i can...
i have all my documents/music/photos/videos/download folders on my 2nd drive incase my system drive fails and have no issues...
and have no issues with vista at all when i ask it to do something i want.
So i always wonder what are people trying to do then??
Its just the layout of the folders, and the document folder is all weird and unlike XP your my docs folder is in one folder and you tell windows what location you want ALL of your docs, instead of your music, pictures, videos all being handled seperately and your actual user folder in vista is always on the C drive, confusing as **** if you ask me
And the start menu is only slightly awkward, it just needs one slight change.
Most used programs on the first list and a button to bring up the menu for all your programs (like XP)

Vista allows you to have your user folder on another drive. i just leave mine on there for some folders and the folders i want on a seperate drive on my D drive.
I have a weird thing on mine - I have my music folder on my G Drive.. If I go to my music folder via my desktop, ie: Desktop>Aaron>>Music, the folder is empty.
If I go G: > music and leave the window open, I can get to my music through the desktop route as well and it all works as it should. If I close the G Drive window, then the content disappears from the other location as well..
Its no biggie, and I dont really need a solution to it, but just thought it was weird!
Thats vista, its the stupid renovating idea of moving random important folders around to make it harder fo you just find your FILES AND WORK!!!
