View Full Version : Blu-ray dead in the water
Too costly for players and discs = bad uptake
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/scienceandtechnology/technology/technologynews/4928422/Blu-Ray-being-killed-off-by-cheap-DVD-players-and-Sky.html
The price of many simple DVD players, which can cost as little as £9.99, is one reason why the old technology is still doing so well. This compares with Blu-ray players, which cost £239 on average.
I love how newspapers phrase things to make them sound worse.. BluRay players are more expensive, but at least compare the lowest priced DVD player to the LOWEST priced BluRay player - not the average price!
Give it time - BluRay players will drop in price, just like DVD players have done.
yeah cos the first dvd player I ever bought was a Samsung and it cost me about £320 where as my Sony blu ray player cost me £160
DVD players are more and more popular every day and you can hardly find any VHS movies to rent at any outlet. Nevertheless, if you really want to watch your DVD movies in style you may want to check out the world’s most expensive DVD player.
Meridian Audio Ltd. creates many exclusive DVD players and the most expensive one as well, the Model 800, with a price tag of $19,950.00 USD.
The difference between this DVD player and others is that it plays videos recorded in the American NTSC and European PAL systems and uses proprietary software to decode the audio, complex processing to increase picture resolution and extra buffer memory.
Goldmund is well known in the audio industry for producing high-end, expensive equipment. The Eidos is their first foray into the high-definition video market.
So how much is the world’s most expensive Blu-ray player? It can be purchased for the extremely low price of $16,900.
So actually, 'high end' dvd players are more expensive than high end BluRay players..

My dad just spent £1500 on a blu-ray player, Its not just any blu-ray player, Its the best blu-ray player IN THE WORLD8)
Can I just ask one thing... Why?!

Gotta agree with Aaron here WHY???
Could have bought my 6month old samsung for £120.00 with 4 films

Don't agree here at all.
My Brother bought a PS3 at launch for £400 and the cheapest standalone Blu-Ray player was £800. The actual Blu-Ray discs were £35 each.
PS3 is less than £300, you can get a decent standalone for less than £200 and a Blu-Ray movie is the same price as a regular DVD.
I don't think Blu-Ray will be around aslong as DVD has been for sure but it certainly isn't dead.
Blu-Ray ROM for PC £60 - £70, cheap as chips.
I paid £130 for a HD-DVD player for my 360 about 2 1/2 years ago, is now £15 on **** and discs are £3 - £5, thats dead in the water.
I know have a LG Blu-Ray ROM in my PC and borrow my brothers discs as i already have a massive collection of DVDs and don't really have the space.
Anyway thats my 2p.
You can get BluRay discs for about £8 each for new releases if you explore a certain South American Rainforest.. I reckon thats pretty good..! :)

I knew you would ask:lol:
Its one of the best quality ones you can buy with 24bit colour and its being displayed on one of the best plasmas on the market. Alot of you wont see a difference between that and a cheap one but on this screen you can...8)
yeah but all that means nothing if your eyes are ******

That tiny bit sharper image is not worth £1500 atall, how big is this screen and what resolution?
Infact what screen is it? And which blueray player?
i'll stick with my AVI's and DIVx's on my sumvision media player which is 560p or 480p usually, quality more than good enough to enjoy a film. I would find it very hard to justify spending £100 let alone £50 to get a slighly sharper picture.

lol, Sorry Tystar. Its all my dads though but i get to use it obviously.
Pioneer have just pulled out of the TV market. Too expensive when you can get a full HD TV for under a bag of sand, Just not the same quality and people wont pay the extra for it.
On a 2nd note i just got a month trading ban from the AV forums for not going with their stupid rules. Idiots..

also what was u selling?
also what was u selling?
And why didn't we know about it..
I was selling the old mission subwoofer.
Someone offerd me £70 Delivered for it.
I replyed saying "£80 and you have a deal"
But then someone offered the £80 too but as i was waiting for a responce from the other guy i didnt reply.
But due to their stupid trading rules offers only stand for 30mins...WHAT!
Yeah like everyone has access to a PC every 30 mins of the day...
The first guy accecpted my counter offer and i sold it to him behind the AV forums backs.
I was told by a mod to sell it to the other guy and i told him to stick his rules.
Hence a 1 month ban:lol:
Fair enough.
So u got much you need to sell on there or is it a month ban that doesnt make much of a difference anyway?

Only one thing left to sell really.
A logitech Harmony 1000;)
Fair enough...
Nice remotes them too. how much u looking for?
Had a look at a Blu ray player today and the video quality was worse than DVD. It was full of static but was coloured like the video it was playing
What BluRay player was that?! Sounds like something was definitely wrong with it!
If it was in a shop they probably hadn't got it set up half sharp or it was running through some naff splitter to umpteen screens. Best thing to do is read a few reviews / get opinions from people who actually own the item.
it was a £500 Sony. It was the only TV that was displaying the blu-ray VS DVD demo.

Gotta agree there.
Blu Ray quality even on a cheap unit would still be better than DVD so gotta agree probably not set up right.
Connected mine back up last night after thinking of selling it and watched 10mins of a film and thought nar i'm keeping this. Quality on blu ray is awsome.
I'm gonna wait until the prices fall to £50  Not a movie watcher really :D

Definitely +1 on that..
even the cheap Bush one I got from Ar*** for £94 was good quality picture but the machine was hit and miss on reading blu ray discs so took it back and got money back then bought my Sony S350 from a rain forest with 5 films free
most reviews and recommendations for players in the price range I had were either the Sony or the Panny bd35
Only probs i've had with discs have been when there's been a problem with the disc.
got 1 on rental from love film and it wouldnt play. asked them to send me another and the next 1 worked no probs.
I use the PS3 for its BluRay capabilities - it was the main reason I bought one actually! Never had any problems with playback either :)
the Bush one would either read a disc right away or spit it out then after about 5 or 6 tries it would play fine..It wasn't the discs cos they all play fine on the Sony :)
Sounds like the cd player in my car at the moment!
Although, i've found that it will always play a specific Jamiroquai cd, and after its played a few seconds of that, it will play any other cd perfectly well, first time  Completely random, but there you go..
Anyway, i should say a blue-ray player would die if you put it in water, its not a turtle you know.
