Hiya guys,

So I have got fed up with waiting for a whole year for windows 7 to load on my netbook, so I have decided to put linux on there, question is how?

I have no Optical Drive, I do have a 8GB USB Drive though... so how do I install linux on my netbook using my 8GB Flash drive?

Cheers Guys ! :thumb:

That's what i used for my netbook, worked a charm. Have you thought about which distro? Personally I'm using Mint, it's a lot less bloated imo than Ubuntu but functions the same, i can't fault it.

Fair enough ! lol.

now i am going to ask a really nooby question... but Linux Mint 12 installed and boy do I like it.

In terms of an anti-virus? or virus' in that matter.. care to shed some light? I have never used linux.:p

You don't really need to worry about viruses on linux tbh. There have been a couple, but really more as 'proof of principle'. That's not really because linux is inherantly more secure though, the simple truth is that windows is so much more common than linux and virus writers will always want to target the most popular platform.

As with any operating system, just be sensible about what you're typing in when visiting websites you don't absolutely trust, identity theft from facebook scams, phishing, and the like are cross-platform and running linux won't protect you if you type your credit card details into some dodgy website :P.

This. You can also get no script and other addons for firefox that can assist in cutting down some of the risks but is better to just stay away from iffy sites.

Interesting, so where in windows we would have an Anti-Virus, linux users just use common sense ? lol

God knows whether im in the right thread for this, or whether im just allowed to change the subject, but, looking on the internet i seen some cool mods to Linux, like the desktop gadgets, and some cool 3D effects, anyone wanna shed some more light on that? lol

I use Puppy Linux 5.28 which uses Ubuntu Lucid binaries so has all of Ubuntu as well as Puppy packages available.
I use a frugal install (which is really just similar to a Virtual disk install). It has the advantage of being extremely portable and easy to maintain - as well as small but well formed.
You can install it to almost any media> I just download the iso (about 130 Mb) and copy the files to wherever if fell like and create a Grub4Dos bootable partition/flash drive using BootIce.
see http://puppylinux.com/other.htm#Puppy-related_web_sites Read about it.

Even if it didn't, that's the good part of Linux, take Arch you start off with the terminal, and 20m later you can have Compiz, LXDE, XFCE, Openbox and a million other DE/WMs installed to use if you really want.

That's one of the great beliefs for malware prevention, but it's simply not true: Legitimate sites get hijacked all the time and have malicious code placed in them.

andyn
03-02-12, 11:35
Legit sites might get hacked occasionally sure, but I think that it's certainly true that the less mainstream and more 'undernet' the site is, the riskier. Honestly, which is more likely to have malware, http://news.bbc.co.uk or http://maf1a.russanhaxxorspwncrakznpron.ru/ (http://russanhaxxorspwncrakznpron.ru/) ?

You can get anti-virus for Linux. Most people (inc myself) don't bother though.

There's a difference between probability of risk and complacency. Advertising that "staying off iffy sites and you'll be safe" is just bad advice as it promote complacency. After all, you only need to be unlucky on one page and you're potentially facing a very messy system rebuild (and that's assuming you even notice that you've become infected, most malware are designed to stay hidden)

Well done ignoring the mention of no script. Here is a link to it.

I'm pretty sure of all the hits most major sites get per day they aren't getting hijacked 24/7. I mean youtube for example gets what 4bil hits per day?

If it was more common then "taking down" big sites wouldn't just be loads of people using DDoS or whatever it is but just deleting strings of code instead of putting malware ones in, or do both and replace all the code with malware and a blank looking page.

im assuming it would be in the repositories, if you are using mint. its been a while since i used compiz, but it is very customisable, i loved making my desktop all shiny and spinning it round!

this is for ubuntu
https://seogadget.co.uk/how-to-install-compiz/
but i reckon it will probably be the same for any distro, you serach for ccsm (compizconfig-settings-manager)

Okay,

So I installed Ubuntu to start with that went on a treat, although... yak yak yak. lol

So i now Have Linux Mint 12 on there, its good to play around with it just sorta .. Works .. unlike windows which takes a lto of coaxing to work.

I want to know how to Install Spotify on there, you have to edit some sort of reposotries... i dont know what this means or how I go about doing this

does anyone know how that offer a step by step?

:D

adding repositories mis usually easiest done via command line i think, copying and pasting from whatever website. they seem to say you can use spotify two ways - either Under Wine or as an unsupported preview version for linux. iv had problems with Wine before, dont know how well spotify works on it though! so maybe the preview version is better

http://www.spotify.com/uk/download/previews/

sorry i cant be more help, i only use ubuntu, and never remember how to add a repository, always just copy the code into Terminal from whatever website and use a step by step guide!

I wasn't ignoring it; it was a good suggestion so why would I argue against it?

Once again you have no idea what you're talking about. Have a read up on the following article: http://www.osnews.com/story/25190 as it's a practical example of what I'm on about.

I'm not saying that big sites commonly get hacked to serve malware. I'm just saying that it happens often enough to make the "stick with trusted sites and you'll be fine" ethos a bad one. After all, when you're talking about system security, it's all theoretical - you need to identify the theoretical issues and plug them. Because by the time that theory has been proven, it's already too late. Which is why people like myself always harp on about best practices rather than misguided wishful thinking.

Spotify for Linux is premium users only. So if you just have a free account, then I'm afraid Spotify will not work

Oddly enough i got quite luck with my netbook and there was enough space (250gb) to dual boot with the latest Windows Ubuntu installer :) however it didnt agree with Unity which 11.10 comes with natively!

That being said however, see http://techhamlet.com/2011/10/install-gnome-shell-in-ubuntu-11-10/ as this is a tasty way of getting rid of that Unity c**p :)

Why don't you just install Mint , it's easier than manually removing Unity.

also Wubi (Windows ubuntu installer) is just awful. I really do advice everyone against using it

DanielWilliamson

I agree Wubi isn't great. I also agree that Unity isn't my personal favourite but I also dislike GNOME now that GNOME3 is everywhere, just install XFCE or Openbox with TiNT2.
