What would be the best benchmarking software to establish if 6gb is going to be of benefit in a system?

The current setup

2gb memory Dual channel

The new setup

4gb memory Dual channel

But could possbily keep the orginal 2gb in and have

6gb memory Single channel

http://www.passmark.com/products/pt_advmem.htm

Give that a go

EDIT: You may want to take a look at some of the tools on this page too http://www.benchmarkhq.ru/english.html?/be_memory.html

Any benefit of 6gb over 4gb will be wiped out by using it in single channel i would have thought

is it really single channel though if your running 2 x 2gb in 1 bank and 2 x 1gb in the other bank. surely dual channel is per bank so this would be dual channel anyway wouldnt it?

when i previously did something like this the mobo would show dual channel mode when the bios posted....

will run all this tonight and see anyway.

Yeah, on my old AthlonXP system, I had 2x256mb and 2x512mb and it showed as Dual Channel at post and in CPU-z iif they were installed in the right order! :)

That cant be right, it was only 939 boards where dual channel came in, because 754 boards didnt have it. Surely?

socket a had dual channel memory controllers where as 754 didn't, shame really as the 754 chips were pretty good other than that.

I had one, was faster than my brothers p4 3ghz. at 2ghz.

Well 6gb installed and mobo shows as dual channel. mmmm

Had to up volts but runs mighty quick now.

It ain't shi* without before and after benchies!

mine shows the same with 2 x 1Gb and 2x2gb :D

Sorry mate, the link previously posted for benchmarking is a 32bit software so doesnt recognise the extra memory.

the only benchies i got are those of me clicking something and it being open b4 i finish clicking :lol::lol:

Socket A definitely had dual channel memory with the nForce2 chipset, which is what my NF7-S had... You had to use good ram, and it only had 3 slots.. 1&2 used one memory channel and slot 3 used another one, so it was actually possible to run 256mb in slots 1&2 and a 512mb stick in slot 3, and still get Dual Channel operation.. :)

I'm on windows 7 as we speak with 2gb patriot 800 @ 1066.

About to run some memory benchies, then with 6gb (2gb patriot, 4gb ocz) then with 4gb 1066 @1066 just the OCZ.

Place your bets on the winner now!...

I think it'll be the 6GB @1066MHz obviously :D but that 4GB OCZ shiz I think will be only a tiny bit behind {^_^}

when it came down to it I couldn't find a decent benchmarking program, so have just stuck my 4gb 1066 ocz in, OC'd it to 1200 and removed my patriot kit.

:D

What is there to loose going from 4GB --> 6GB or can't you OC your patriots upto 1200MHz?
